This cute crochet key fob is a great beginner project and uses basic stitches. You will enjoy pairing different colors together. These key fobs are a cute, small gift or would be great for your summer craft fair booth! Enjoy the free crochet pattern.
Happy Wednesday Whistlers! Several years ago, my sister sewed me a simple key fob, which I have kept on my keyring since then. Even though it was a small gift, I appreciated the gesture of a handmade item, and I felt special that it was made just for me. I am sad that it is wearing out. The fabric near the keyring is beginning to tear, so I figured I better make myself a new one for when this one is completely wore out. My new crochet key fob is sitting on my key ring, ready for when I need to use it. (I won’t switch over until my old one completely breaks apart!)
This pattern is quite simple. It took me a bit of time to devise the perfect way to attach the crochet to the key clip, but it works out great and I love how the two-toned color work looks.

Crochet Key Fob Tutorial:
Ch 40.
Slip the end of your chain through the bottom of the key ring. Sl st into the first ch, forming a loop (take care not to twist the ch. (Photo 1)
1. Ch 1. Hdc in same st. Hdc 39. Join with sl st. (40 sts) (Photo 2)
2. Ch 1. Sc in same st. Sc 39. Join with sl st. (40 sts)
3. Ch 1. Sc in same st. Sc 39. Join with sl st. (40 sts).
If your first color is your accent color and bottom layer, don’t break the yarn.
Using your second color, ch 40. Pull the end through the key ring and join with first ch, forming a loop.
(Photo 3) Repeat rows 1-3. You will have 2 layers on your key ring. (Photo 4)
Position the two layers so right sides are facing outward and line them up. Then, taking the loop from your first layer, pull it through the 2nd layer and slip st them together across the side. (Photo 5)
Tie off and weave in end. Using same color yarn, slip stitch around the bottom. (for ease, I stuffed most of the loose ends in between so I didn’t need to weave them in). (Photo 6) (Photo 7)
To finish your crochet key fob, using two strands of yarn on your darning needle and sew a line below the key ring, securing it at the end. (Photo 8)
I also experimented with colors and I think this navy blue one with two colors of pink is my favorite. I did the outside stitching a complimentary color and it’s so cute!
I also added a star design to the orange one. If you decide to do this, add the stars/embroidery before you slip stitch the two layers together.
I think these cute key rings would be a great craft fair item too. I didn’t have a small “best seller” this year, and I think it was a mistake. These will be perfect for next year!
xoxo,
Very pretty pattern! Do you think this would be a good gift for a group of teen girls??

Thank you for yet another fantastic free patten! These will be a great gift for all the “guys” in the family. I’m always sending things to the grandaughters and dil but it’s hard to find things for ds and 19 year old dgs, then after I thought of this for them I thought it would also be great for the rest of the adult grandchildren. Luckily the key rings and clips I already have are the perfect size
You are very welcome Ruth! It’s so nice when you have all the materials, isn’t it!
Hello,
I m very new to crochet, would you have a Video on this which i can refer to?
For the whole project or for the stitches?
I’m fairly new to crochet as well. the only thing I don’t understand is the stitch you use to make your border.
It is a slip stitch, its like a chain, but you working it into the piece as a stitch.
Lovely pattern…..probably should have clicked on the key ring link before purchasing…..i only got .47 inch rings……WAY too small. Lol.
Oh no! I’m sorry!
I was searching for teacher gifts on Pinterest but nothing stuck out to me…so I decided to have my son pick out the yarn colors and I made these for his teachers. I attached them to cardstock that said “thank you for the keys to a successful year in kindergarten”. My son also rubbed a key with a crayon so it looked like there was a key hanging from it. All 3 teachers loved it. The only thing I did differently was instead of chaining I did a foundation single crochet followed by 2 more rows of single crochet. It evened the sides out better for me.
Oh love that idea!!! How cute!
I used Peaches and Cream cotton yarn and an F hook, but mine still seems to be much larger than yours.
Yeah, I have used Peaches and Cream before and I feel like my projects come out large when I use it, as well!
This is exactly what I was looking for when my boyfriend wished for a “simple keychain, preferaby, like, a strip with two colours”. Thank you so much for the pattern! :)
Yay! You are very welcome!
Can’t wait to try these. Would you mind sharing where you bought the key hooks? I haven’t been able to find any just like these.
Thanks in advance
yes, I have linked to them in the materials list ;)
Followed your FB post here to your blog as your key fob caught my eye. These would make wonderful gifts for my grown children. Thank you for sharing.
