A few weeks ago I order a few pairs of foam flip-flops from Old Navy. After I designed my It’s Not Knit Tote, I realized the yarn almost exactly matched the aqua-colored flip-flops! So I started thinking of ways to add some crochet flair to these plain flip-flops. The construction of these sandals is quite simple, you just add a small square! But they look SO cute on the feet. I am loving them!

I highly recommend using cotton yarn. It will wash easy and it won’t be a problem if (and when) your crochet flip flops get wet. I experimented with Medium (Red Heart Scrubbie Smoothie and Knit Picks Dishie) and Sport weight yarn (Knit Picks CotLin). Though they all worked well, but I lean towards the medium weight yarn,  It tends to fill in the spaces better without causing your stitches to be “ruffly” on top. This could also be because of the size hook I used, so do your own experimenting to get the right fit. There is no right or wrong way!

CROCHET FLIP FLOPS UPCYLE PATTERN:

Step one:

Start by crocheting around the strap on the flip-flops. It takes a bit of practice to get your stitches looking clean and neat. Don’t give up, just practice a bit more if it doesn’t look the way you would like. It’s definitely a change from regular crochet. When you get to the connecting piece at the front, simply rotate the sandal and continue up the other side. Cut your end.

Step Two:

Glue the ends in place at the base of the flip flop straps. Wrap your ends piece and glue it on the underside of strap where it meets the foam. This keeps it from bothering your foot once you are done.

Step Three:

Make the square middle piece:
Start with your corresponding color (or use same color if you prefer)
Ch 3.
1. Dc 12 in the first ch. Join with sl st. (12 sts)
Switch to main color.
2. Ch 1. Sc in same st. *Sc, ch 2, sc all in next st. Sc in next 2 sts.* work three times. Sc, ch 2, sc all in next st. Sc in last st. Join.
Tie off.

Step Four:

Sew the square in place by laying in flat, lining up the edges with the tops of the stitches on the flip flop strap. Using your darning needle, start on one side and sew down and up the other side, and back again so it’s very secure.
Tie off and weave in your ends.

Step Five:

Make a chain about 65-80 sts long for the tie. Using your hook, pull it through the top corner of the crochet square. Tie it around your ankle when wearing your crochet flip flops.

Yeah, I am probably going to add crochet to all the flip-flops in my closet now.

How about you?

Why do I have to get all the comments when I only want a printed copy of the instructions? This is a total waste of my copier paper. I love your patterns and your website but not all the comments that I could easily read if I wanted to.

To only print the pattern, you will need to highlight the text, right click and click print. When you simple hit “print” from the top bar, your printer will automatically print everything on the webpage.

You can choose to print only the pages you need. If the pattern is just on the first two pages, for example, choose the page range as either 1, 2 or 1-2. That should solve the problem.
