This crochet plaid blanket CAL has been a long time coming! I have mentioned this before but I am actually a fairly  slow crocheter compared to many. I can’t seem to get myself going faster, so projects like blankets and garments take me a very long time. I am so excited that this blanket is finished and I can finally share it with you because I have been working on it for several months!

I am so pleased with the result. I am even more excited to see YOUR crochet plaid patchwork blanket. I love seeing you take my patterns and add your own creativity. It’s awesome!

My kids are fighting over who gets the blanket and to be totally honest I might keep it for myself. I have been thinking of lining the back with some snuggly flannel.

So I decided to start this week out with our familiar, basic buffalo plaid technique. Today’s squares will be a buffalo plaid square, with the blocks comprising of 5 dc sts wide and two rows tall. You won’t have to carry the unused color for this square(yay!)

You can create any size blanket that you would like, but for the purpose of this CAL, I will give instructions for making the blanket exactly like mine. Of course you can change this to fit your own liking and tastes. I am looking forward to seeing your style and unique touch!

  1. This may be a dumb question, but I am fairly new to crocheting plaid …. when crocheting the large block plaid square in grey/black/white, do you cut the black and white yarn every 2 rows (so when those blocks are done)?

I am absolutely in love with this pattern, thank you so much for it! :)

    1. Hi Stef! No, it’s not a dumb question :) Just drop it when you finish the row, then pick it up when you need it again, so it will run along the side, but you will cover that up with the border.

  2. I made this for my husband. He loves it. Couldn’t get the mountains done in time for father’s day. It is still amazing. Thank you!!!

  3. 3i have completed 3 Buffalo Plaid squares and one geometric. They are nit ghe same size. The geometric pattern is for 1 more row =18 and the other is 17 rows. I am perplexed!

  4. I have completed the first 4 blocks although I changed the antlers for two geometric squares in red and white. I am about to attempt the mountain peaks. I am not a fan of using bobbins but will try. My fallback position will be solid color mountains done in 3 different colors. Wish me luck! Thank you for this wonderful pattern!

    1. You can do it! just be SUPER patient, it takes much longer to do color work. EXPECT tangles, you will just untangle after each row. Nice and slow. There is a reason I only did three LOL

      1. Ok, so did one mountain peaks in plaid but did other two solid. One with light grey background with red mountain and the other dark grey with white mountains. Tomorrow is blocking and sewing. Phew! Lol

  5. what am I doing wrong? (day one block 1) 34 st across HDC 17 rows… mine dose not look anything like a square, I would have to do 5 more rows to make it square.
    Help

  6. I love this. My son has asked me to make this blanket for him so I am going to give it a go! Made my first red/black large plaid square last night. I was so excited how it turned out. Thank you for this. Love that it can be used not just at Christmas but all the time!!!

  7. Oh my gosh!!!! I love buffalo plaid (especially red) and fell in love with this blanket as soon as I saw it. I think I will be making it for my grandson who was actually asking me today when I was going to be making his blanket (I am making one for all of my grandkids) He is still a couple down the line but I think I can do this one and still work on one or two more different ones. CANNOT wait to make it 😃😃😃

  8. Hi Beth,
I came across your CAL on Pinterest and I’m considering ordering the pdf, I just wanted to verify that the plaid mountain square is available as well. I’m only asking because day 5 says construction.
    Thanks!
    Valerie

  9. Late starter:

I just decided to give this blanket a try. Can you tell me the total number of skeins of each color I should buy for the entire project? I can’t find the totals for the complete project anywhere.

    Thanks.

      1. Thanks. I figured out that those were for the entire project. I just bought my yarn today. Thanks for the reply. I will try to get caught up. This is a beautiful pattern.

  10. I’m hoping you can help me…I’m having trouble with one of the transitions of color. In the section of instructions #2 where I’ve added the astericks below, can you tell me if you are actually dropping the gray yarn right there before the last 2 stitches of Black and if so when you go to pick it up in Step 3 (*****) where you switch to Gray, it causes a little bit of the yarn to lay on top of your work.

If you go ahead and carry it through those last two stitches it causes the extra yarn to be on the outside (raw edge) that I know a sc border will be worked around. I’ve tried it both ways, but would prefer to do it how you have for this project.

    2. Ch 2. Dc in same st. Dc in next st. Switch to Black. Dc in next 5 sts. Switch to Gray. Continue alternating between black and gray every 5 sts for next 25 sts. *****Switch to Black. Dc in last 2 sts. Turn. (34 sts)
    3. Continuing with black, Ch 2. Dc in same st. Dc in next st. *****Switch to Gray. Dc in next 5 sts. Switch to black. Continue alternating between black and gray every 5 sts for next 25 sts. Switch to Gray. Dc in last 2 sts. Turn. (34 sts)

I hope this makes sense! THANK YOU for any help!
    Chrys

      1. Yes, I have but I’ve always worked in the round. Oh well, I’ll just carry it across the two stitches and then back up the side.
        Thank you!

          1. You drop the gray and pick it back up when you need it on the next row. It will carry up the side as you go and you will cover it up with the border round when you are finned.

  11. I was so looking forward to doing this CAL, however have never been able to do the sc foundation row.

I wish everyone luck with this Cal.. it looks beautiful.

    1. You can just do a chain foundation instead Susan! The chainless foundation is my preferred method but you can certainly substitute a regular chain foundation here. Just keep the counts the same!

    2. Hi! I love the pattern and it’s a top contender for my mom’s Christmas present! I’m just wondering if the amount of yarn listed is for the entire blanket or just certain squares? Thank you!

  12. I am so in love with this blanket. It is gorgeous. I am going to make at least one, first one for me❤️ Thank you so much for such a beautiful blanket.

  13. Hi, I subscribed again, already am subscribed, cause I want to get the “Crochet Plaid Quick Start Guide.” Thanks for the free pattern.
