Some of you may remember the Crochet Nativity Set CAL from last year. It was a beautiful, rustic little set. Very minimalistic and lovely. I still love my small set with just the characters of Mary, Joseph and Baby Jesus, but I decided to expand the set this year and add the rest of the visitors. Also, I figured there may be many who didn’t have a chance to make the set last year and it would be fun to participate as a group again this year.
I also updated the figures from last year. Nothing huge, just some little updates. Many people had problems with the manger, and I admit, I had some tunnel vision in the design process. I see ONE way to make something and can’t see a possible way to make it differently. Well, there is a much simpler way and I will publish an updated version during the CAL.
Also, the photos are not inclusive! I don’t have the angel pictured, nor all the accessories for the figures. I am still deciding what kind of cloak to give the kneeling wise man.
CROCHET NATIVITY SET CAL
Mark your calendars: the dates will be Monday, November 13th – Sunday November 19th (I know, it’s a ways out, but I wanted to give you time to gather your supplies).
You can follow along in a few different ways. You can stop by my blog each morning and get the new patterns for the CAL. You can also follow along with my Facebook Page and wait for me to share the links there. You can also join the Facebook Group and see the new links in the feed. The group is also a fun place to share your progress. It’s very fun to see everyone’s color choices and bits of creative flair in their unique projects.
What you need:
I wrote the patterns using fingering weight yarn, a UK 2 ply yarn. I suggest Palette Yarn by Knit Picks. It’s 100% wool and gives the set a beautiful rustic look. It also comes in over 150 colors, so you should be able to make the set to match your perfect color palette. Several people from last year used other weights as well, so if you ask in the group, I am sure you will get lots of ideas! I used a variety of grays and browns. I do recommend Oyster Heather, the cream color of the shepherds head cloaks. It’s a perfect rustic, linen color, and I used it to make the angel as well. I also like Verdant Heather, the dark green. It’s perfect for the palm tree and I used it for the wise men as well. One ball of a few colors is more than enough to make a set, it really doesn’t use a ton of yarn.
For those who want to know which exact colors I used for my set, these are what I used:
Almond (tree trunk)
Rooibos Heather (reddish brown)
-I used a size F hook, but the hook size you need to meet the gauge will vary! Joseph will be about 5″ tall. If you see that there are large spaces in between the stitches and your stuffing is coming out, then you need to go down a hook size.
-You will also need a good, sharp darning needle to weave in the ends and sew parts together.
-Similarly, you can use a hot glue gun to attach the parts(I like my mini glue gun). I prefer to attach the parts using a hot glue gun, personally. My hand stitching is not very clean and neat, so gluing works better for me personally.
You will need to weigh down the bottoms of the figures so they will stay standing up. You can buy a small bag of river rocks at your local dollar store (one bag is more than enough), or you can buy some on amazon.
The rest of each figure will be stuffed with Polyfil. This kind is my favorite.
Creche and Pedestal:
If you would like to purchase a creche to display your finished nativity set, I recommend this Etsy shop. They are beautifully made. I also commissioned a custom pedestal for the angel to sit on, to display to the side of the creche. The angel is not included in photograph! I like to keep a bit of mystery to my CALs :) However, I will be posting a photo of the pedestal and creche next week, so if you would like to see a better photo before you buy, hold off for a bit.
What we are making:
The CAL will include the newly updated patterns for the set from last yet: Mary, Joseph, Manger, Baby Jesus and a Palm Tree. The new patterns will be 3 wise men, 2 shepherds and an angel.
I hope you like what I have come up with and I am so excited to see your little nativities!
