Free Crochet Pattern - Women's Chunky Boat Slippers | Make these comfy slippers, the perfect cozy slippers to wear all-year-round.

I hope you have been enjoying our Slipper CAL! Today I am sharing my contribution, the Women’s Chunky Crochet Boat Slippers.

This past week, I began my morning routine which starts with feeding our dog, Goose. I usually fill his water bowl in the afternoon, because in the morning it’s still half-full. However, this particular morning, it was almost empty so I paused, taking a split second to decide whether to get his food first, or fill his water bowl first. Unfortunately, I paused with my ankle “holding” the storm door open, (which was open all the way) and it came crashing into my leg and ankle.
Ouch.
Needless say, I have been unable to wear shoes for over a week, as they rub right on the very sore wound on the back of my foot. So I have been wearing sandals in 40º weather outside, and rushing back inside, putting on my new Chunky Crochet Boat Slippers.
Thankfully,  these babies are comfy!

I have been sitting on the idea of crocheting my original Women’s Boat Slippers with chunky yarn for a while, and I knew this CAL was a great time to make the pattern happen. I love the chunky texture! I have been wearing mine around our house since I finished a pair in my size.

Turn 90º so you are working across the flap top of the flap. Ch 1. (work sideways across the last dc. Sc 8. Tie off.
Leave a long tail.

Sew the flap in place using a smaller hook and the tail of the flap. Use a simple running stitch. To keep things neat and even, you can pin the flap in place before sewing. Since the dc stitches on the top of the post make the flap flair out, sew this part using an overcast stitch, and let the edge of the flap sit on the top of the side, instead of meeting flush with the side (as with the rest of the shoe). This will give it a bit of a moccasin-style look, but it keeps the flap secure at the edges.

To finish:
Take a length of your 1st color yarn, and push the end up through the hole at the top of the strap. Using a hook, weave it in and out of the top of the shoe, stitching across the top. Pull the end up and out the hole on the other strap.

  1. Hi Bethany,

I want to make these SO badly, but I’m not understanding the instructions very clearly. In my chain of 19, I get all the way through to 7 dc in last chain. Where do the rest of the stitches go? “Dc 5. Hdc 3. Sc 8. (42 sts) Join with a sl st.”

Thanks for any help you can offer!

      1. I finally figured it out from the other version of this pattern, and I face palmed so hard haha! Thank you for replying tho. They turned out awesome!

        1. You work back around the other side of the chain. You worked across it, then the 7 dc makes a half circle which brings you around to the other side, then you will work back across it until you meet your first stitch.

  2. Do you have a pattern like this for men or how could I adjust to make a pair for my husband? He really liked them when he saw them

    1. I don’t, I am sorry! As for adjusting, you can make them longer by adding 1 chain on the foundation for each size up. To make them wider, you can add rounds, but make sure to do the increases (adding an extra single crochet in between the increase for each extra round).

  3. I don’t have any superbulky yarn so I want to check the gauge using two strands worsted held together to substitute. What stitch did you use for your gauge check?

  4. Hi Bethany! I love the pattern. I’m just getting really confused at the toe flap part. “Turn 90º so you are working across the flap top of the flap. Ch 1. (work sideways across the last dc. Sc 8. Tie off.” Unfortunately, this is making no sense to me. Can you offer any advice? Or is there a video I can watch? Thank you so much!

    1. I am sorry, I don’t have a video! You are working across the flat part of the arch for those instructions. So far, your toe flap should look like an arch. The bottom of the arch (which is the top of the flap) needs a row of stitches so it looks cleaner and neater. You should end at the bottom of the arch, where if you turn your piece 90 degrees, you can work across the flat part. Are you ending on that side?

      1. I’m not getting a flat part =/ in fact… mine looks like the letter “C”. and I don’t have the neat middle row running up the center like in the pictures. I’m turning like the instructions say. Am I supposed to continue along the other side of the chain?

        1. Ashley-

If you read my comment below I inserted some extra sts that were possibly missing from the toe flap original pattern. Mine also turned out in a “c” shape! Glad I’m not the only one who though I was going crazy! LOL It is an awesome pattern and it fits perfectly! Thanks bethany for all the hard work that went into making this pattern!

          1. Oh thank you so much! That helps tremendously. They look great :D And thank you, Katie!

  5. The directions for the top flap part I believe aren’t complete. I followed them to a T and it was super weird….

“Toe Flap: (this is a separate piece)
    Ch 7.

    1. Sc in 2nd ch from hook. Hdc 4. Sc 5 in last ch. Turn. (Should this be sc in 2nd ch from hook, hdc 4, 5sc in last chain. Continue around to other side hdc 4, sc 1. Turn). THEN
    2. Ch 1. Sc in same st. Sc 4. Sc 2 in (each of the) next 5 sts. Sc 5. Turn.
    3. Ch 2. Dc in same st. Hdc. Sc 3. *Sc. 2 sc in next st.* repeat 5 times. Sc 3. hdc. dc in last st.”
??? So you are working in like an arch….

  6. I keep getting stuck on Round 7 of the size 7 pattern the last part after the flap? Any advice I seem to have a lot of unworked stitches?

    1. I have the same problem ( I am referring to Antz’s Question) . I think there needs to be 4 hdc after the flap and 4 hdc after the skipped stitches and then you can follow with the DC2tog 4times hdc. My count could be off but I think I am close.

        1. I am working on size 6/7. Step 7. After the second strap it says hdc2 sk nxt st. Hdc in next st. Hdc. Skip next st. Hdc in nxt st. At that point I still have 4 single crochet stitches from the previous row before I get to the dbl crochet stitches. I hope that makes sense.

          1. Oh my goodness! Yes I see what you are saying. It should say hdc 3. You should have a total of 9 hdc on the side before going into the dc2tog.

  7. Thanks t for the pattern! It’s great!:) I want to make these fo my granny her foot measure is 10 inches. I tried size 9 with a 7mm hook the sole was only 8.5 inches! I love this pattern and badly want to make it ….!! Can u please help?

  8. These are great slippers (and they look so cozy)! FYI, Tauni from Snap featured these in Show + Tell 211.

  9. should the instructions for the size 6 or 7 read 3 sc in in 2nd ch from hook? if I sc in 3rd ch from hook it does not add up to 38.

    1. YES! Thank you for catching that mistake and bringing it to my attention, you are exactly right. I have updated the pattern. Thank you!

  10. Hi Bethany, thank you for the pattern on the chunky Boat Slippers, however I’m having a hard time understanding #5 it says Ch1. Sc in same St. Sc 47. Hdc. Dc 8 Hdc (58 Sts) I don’t add up to 58 sts Can You Please Break it down for me how many sc how many hdc How Many Dc and How many on the last Hdc. in this order. Sorry if I sound silly.

  11. Hi Bethany thank you for the pattern on the Chunky Boat Slippers, however I’m not sure I understand row 5 says Sc in Same St.

    1. Sc in the same st is the 2 loops under the ch 1, this means you will not be counting the ch 1 as the first st, you will be working an actual st in that space and it will be the first st of the round.

  12. I think I may be missing something. I followed the directions for the 7 rounds, but I ended up without the top of the foot covering as shown in the pictures. Can you please clarify?

    1. You are missing part of the pattern, I am terribly sorry! I don’t know how I didn’t catch that. I have added it now, it is a separate piece that is sewn on.

  13. Did I miss a step? I seem to be missing the entire portion that covers the toes, between the straps… I am so sorry if this is my error, but I can’t figure out where I messed up!

    1. No, it is MY error, and I am so sorry for the confusion! I complete missed that I hadn’t added the toe flap. I have fixed it now. I apologize again!

      1. FANTASTIC! I just finished a horribly tacky yellow and purple test pair (which I will wear the mess out of at home). Now I’m ready to make them for several of my pregnant friends as hospital presents. And I just perused some of your baby patterns this afternoon… Can’t wait to start on so many little shoe projects! They are so adorable and well designed. You have an amazing eye for color, too. Thanks for all the inspiration!

  14. Hi Bethany
I have such good luck to find such great patterns. I appreciate your work designing them. A real talent and one I wish I had.
Your ideas are great and I enjoy using the patterns.
I have the supplies to add a jute sole for the slippers. lol. Never have I done it before. If you have any suggestions I would appreciate it. It’s one of those things you/I want to make or do and keep putting it off! Scared it won’t turn out…..silly to think that but thoughts have a mind of their own. Anyway…I’m going to buy the patter and some yarn and give it a go. Please keep up the good work.
    A fan
