crochet hat pattern for baby modern crochet baby hat

Hello everyone! Today I am sharing another crochet pattern, this Faux Ribbon Baby Hat. It’s so easy, definitely a beginner project (my very first crochet project was a hat!). I love making this little crochet hat for baby showers and other baby gifts, because it works up quick, it’s so cute, and it complete a set if you decide to make these mary jane booties as well.

I don’t have a gauge swatch, but if you make sure your circle by step 4 has a 3” diameter, you know your sizing will be on track. I have added a note in the pattern as well.

  1. I’m a manager at a Holiday Retirement, our Crochet circle will be making many of these for the “shaken baby syndrome” September 2014. Thanks for a fun pattern for a sad reason!

  2. I can not get the magic circle, could you please tell me the way to do a chain stitch and join start? Thank you, love your patterns!

    Many thanks,
    Lisa

  3. HI! I love you website and am a newbie so I’m still learning how to read patterns. I had no trouble with the flip flops or the mary janes but I think I’m not reading this one correctly…where it says HDC 2, HDC 3, HDC 4 does this mean 2 HDC’s in the same st., 3 HDC’s in the same st and 4 HDC’s in the same stitch? Ive seen it written “2 hdc in the same st ” in a pattern but not this way and I’m interpreting it the same and my hat is looking ridiculous:-) Thanks for the help and thank you for sharing your gift!

    1. No, you work each one in it’s own stitch. When I want you to work them together, I will say specifically, “in the same st”.

  4. Im started to have fun doing chrochet hats for my baby..i saw your website and i love to do your hats.they are adorable for my princess.thsnk you..

  5. hi… your hat is so cute. I’m just a beginner just following patterns but going to you tube if I dont understand the meaning . I got lots of acrylic yarns,, are those fine coz i only get cheap ones.
hope theres a video on this.
    Thanks for sharing. God Bless

  6. I crochet and knit for the charity Project Warm-up. May I use your cute baby hat pattern for charity crocheting?

  7. I like a lot of crochet patterns on these websites. But very few have the videos. Since I don’t know how to crochet without video, I had to go to youtube to find some. Are there other websites which have the videos for the crochet patterns. Thanks !

  8. This is an adorable pattern and i am going to make a couple in small and larger sizes for my friend’s new grand daughter. I also want to tell you that I made several pairs of Mary Janes for her shower in various colors and various sizes and used them as package ornaments…the y were definately a crowd pleaser…

  9. im trying to email this to myself but unfortunately i dnt have outlook setup on my pc to do that. is there another way to get this pattern.

  10. I really like this pattern and how simple it is for a beginner like myself. The only problem I am having is that I am making this for a friend’s daughter (just turned two) and as I have never made any type of hat before I’m not sure how big to make it. Any suggestions on sizing would be helpful, please and thank you!

    1. Well it depends on what size of hook and what size of yarn. I can tell you that I use a G hook, and Caron Simply Soft Solids medium weight yarn, and I work 8 rounds, [increasing each round] plus a round where you make 15 hdc, then 2 hdc in the next st, all around the hat, it fits my two year old. Hope that helps!

    2. Ok I have been working on this 1 for my 2 yr old and one for my 7m old. I am using a g6 hook is that the same as a g? What I am making is not looking like a hat but more flat. It doesn’t seem right I am on row 8. Not sure what I am doing wrong. When I am doing the 3hdc then 2 hdc in same stitch do I keep doing that all around? I am not sure where I have messed up. Help please I want to make these for Xmas for my girls.

  11. Love the hat and want to make one but I’m new to crocheting and have a question.
You say to start with a magic circle – is that the first row (6 sc join with sl st)? Thanks JD

  12. Hi Bethany,

I really really love this pattern. I want to make this one too, but I want a size that will fit a female adult. I hope you can help me out.

    Thanks,
    Shaw

    1. Sure! All you need to do is keep increasing until you reach your desired circumference. So, continue after step 7, and keep adding another hdc in between your 2 hdc worked in the same st. Once your hat is as big around as you want, finish by doing 1 hdc in each st all around until it’s your desired length. Be sure to leave room for the edge (triple crochet and sc).

  13. Hi Bethany, your Faux Ribbon Baby Hat is so adorable, i truly want to make it right now, but i am working on another project right now, and having some problems with it. I usually don’t have problems with following a pattern but i am having problems with this one it is Baby Boat Booties! Thank you for the adorable hat pattern. God bless you.

  14. visiting from craftilicous link party. This is great. I would like to give this a go but do not understand some of your abbreviations. What is HDC? Do you have another pattern that explains the crotchet code? Cheers Karen
