We have run into a bit of a problem. The weather has turned cold–real cold, and Sis doesn’t seem to think she needs anything on her bald head, or tiny feet.
I beg to differ.

I would say we are at an impasse, but I AM THE PARENT.
So I came up with a solution – a crochet baby hooded cowl.
She is a little fox and can still get this hooded cowl off when she is undisturbed in her carseat for long period of time, however, it DOES stay on her head most of the time particularly during the dash from our warm house to the warm car. It has been a welcome solution!

Isn’t the grit stitch so lovely? That beautiful texture is created by working a sc and dc in the same stitch, then skipping the next stitch to keep the count consistent. I absolutely love this stitch! The silky yarn is perfect for this crochet baby hooded cowl, too.  Mighty Stitch yarn works so well for baby items. It’s SO soft, and it’s an acrylic/wool blend, so I know she will be so cozy in her hooded cowl.

  1. Hiya,

You’ve given cowl piece measurements as 14″x7″ and the hood piece measurement as 14″- what is the hood piece width?

    Thanks

    Dominique

  2. Hi, Want to make this for my niece but in DK 8 ply yarn. Can you give the measurements of the pieces o that I will know I am on the right track. You give the length. What is the width?
    Thanks for sharing this pattern

      1. Thanks. Did a test in the 10 ply and then made 1 in 8 ply/DK. Really happy at the way it turned out.

  3. Hi Bethany. I am having trouble with this pattern. I have crochet both pieces but when I put them together they are to big. I am not sure if I am putting them together correctly. The head piece is to long.

  4. Hi Bethany- I love this pattern and would love to make it formula granddaughter. I’ve been working with chunky yarn lately, making beanies and would like to make this in chunky. Do you have a version with chunky yarn or know if there is one. Thank you so much. I love your site!!!

  5. How would you make this pattern smaller.. I love the pattern, have made a couple.. any help will be appreciated

    Thank you
    Diane Luett

    1. The cowl would be pretty easy, you can begin with less chains and work less rows. The hood would be a bit trickier. I am not sure I can tell you without working and experimenting with sizing myself. Probably the same thing though, work fewer rows and begin with fewer chains.

  6. Hi thank you for sharing such a lovely snood pattern. All i come across are made with chunky yarn. Just needed to confirm one thing how large does the cowl need to be as per head circumference .. for instance when we make a hat we keep the hat circumference 1.5-2inch smaller to give it snug fit
it would be a great help
    Thanks

    1. I am not sure how to tell you. The hood is not fitted, and neither is the cowl. I would not make it snug, it might be difficult to put on and off. I can tell you that the pattern is for 6-12 months, and that the finished, unsewn measurements for both pieces in 14″.

  7. Hi, I love this pattern it’s just gorgeous and I’ve started crocheting it for my granddaughter, I was just wondering if you could give me the finished measurements of what it should be. Such as width and length of cowl, circumference of head and width of head, thankyou so much I’d really appreciate it. 😃

    1. Thank you! The cowl is about 14″ long (if you are working at the indicated gauge) before sewn, and the hood is 14″ long before sewn. The length of the cowl is about 7″, but that part can be altered very easily by beginning with more or less chains. Since it is not a fitted hat, it will a fit a variety of head circumferences. My daughter was 13 months in the photo.

  8. Bethany, what are the numbers at the beginning of a row? As in -36 or -45. Also, how many rows of the ribbing do you work? How many rows in the hood? Is this a pattern or a method…I can’t tell.

  9. Thank you Bethany for this gorgeous little hat with cowl, it is a brilliant idea
Also all the other cute, beautiful and so useful patterns you have shared with us.
I love the idea as your cutie grows you manage to make an up sizes.
Thank you for all your designs done in what ‘spare time’ you have.
I wont say keep it up please. But I will always appreciate a bit bigger.. lol

  10. I love this pattern it is so cute! I made the whole thing and before I put it together I made sure the cowl part fit around my daughters head. And it was perfect. And then when I attached the hood it didn’t have any stretch on the seam and it wouldn’t fit over her head 😫 Did you have this problem? Or do you have any suggestions?

  11. Hi! I really love this little pattern and would like to make it for my grand daughter. She has a pretty big head though. The stitch is really nice and I would like to use it, but I would have to make it bigger. Could you possibly give the multiples and +? Thanks so much if you can:)

      1. Thank you Bethany, for answering so quickly:)! It’s just starting to get very cold here and I had just made some little mittens and your hat and cowl combo will be perfect with them. We have the same problem with our little imp keeping the hat on and it is SO cute! Just like your baby she’s a doll! Thanks again so much! Happy crocheting:)

    1. I don’t have one yet, but I will be releasing one for toddlers/preschoolers next week. Be sure to follow or subscribe so you don’t miss it!

      1. Thank you so much. Looking forward to the release of your pattern for toddlers/preschoolers. aiting impatiently to get started on it for my grandchildren (twins, one boy, one girl) 6 years old. Thanks again for this awesome pattern.

  12. This is so cute. I would like to try. It, but I have to learn the stitches again. I had a stroke in March and I do not remember all of the stitches, except DC. I can do that one. I will have to read my stitch book. And brush up on them. It’s hard knowing that you use to have them tucked away in your brain and now I have to go back and learn them again..I will do it, but right now I am making cowls for Christmas. I made 2 8of them last year and now it took me 8months to get started . I have been using the DC and so far they are ok, but the yarn I. Am using is terrible o work with. It’s Lion Brand Homespun Thick and quick. It’ a soft yarn and they turn out great but the yarn sheds and it’s. Everywhere.
I love crocheting and a few years ago I made a lot of baby hats but you’re is really cute and I can’t wait to try it for someone. All of our babies are growing. Up. The girl just turned 3 but we have a baby boy turning one next month, I guess I could make him one.I will try it soon. Thanks for the Pattern.

    1. No worries! I think it will come back to you if you give yourself a refresher. Youtube is a great resource! You are very welcome for the pattern!

  13. You really didn’t explain row 2. -36. Work in Back Loops Only (BLO). Do I ch 1 and do 36 hdc?
What age group is this for. I what love to crochet it for my grandaughter.
    Thank you.

  14. I love this!! It is just adorable and so perfect for taking a wee one out on a snowy day! Thank you so much for the pattern!
