Baby Sandals Construction:

Use your darning needle to attach the opposite side of your bow strap. Going in and out, sew it to the sc on the other side of the shoe. Make sure to thoroughly weave in the ends.

To make the flap into a bow, pinch it with your fingers (pinch it so the edges are going upwards, and the inside bumps up) and tie a knot of yarn using the same color leaving a long tail (Keep it a little bit loose) Make sure the knot is on the under side. Then, using the tail, wrap the yarn around the center of the strap 5 or 6 times. Tie off. You can also secure it with a dab of hot glue.

  1. I just made a pair of your flip-flops and the video that you posted was very helpful for those. I am excited to make these sandals too, do you have any plans to make a video for these? It looks like the soles are the same, but a video for the rest of the sandal would be great.
Thanks for the super cute patterns, I can’t wait to try more of your items!

    1. Thank you so much! And yes! I am working on the gladiator sandals video right now, and will be getting to these shortly.

  2. Hey! Thanks for the awesome pattern! I’m making these to donate to a library auction fundraiser, and I’m confused about something: when slip-stitching the soles together, do I do it with the same color as the sole (in my case, white), or with the alternate color (in my case, purple)? It looks in the image like maybe it’s done with the opposite color, but it doesn’t say to use the opposite color in the pattern (unless it does and I’m missing it somewhere), so I didn’t know if that alternate color around the outside is actually done later or something.

  3. Hi,

I printed the pattern for the flip flop sandal and the Whistle & Ivy logo is covering part of the directions. I noticed it is covering it on the pages also. Is there any way you can let me know what the line is. It is on every page that it is covered. I would love to make them for a baby due at the end of January but if not they can be for later on.

    Thanks, Michele

    1. Hi Michele,

Sorry you are having trouble! Can you explain what “the line” is? I am not sure what you need from me.

      1. I’m sorry I wasn’t clear. If you go to the pattern there is a black square with your logo, Whistle & Ivy, that is covering a line at the bottom of the square. I don’t know how else I can make it clearer. It’s even covering it on the website so I don’t know how others have printed it and been able to use it.

        Thank you, Michele

        1. Oh yes! The logo should be very light gray and doesn’t interfere with reading the pattern. Try adjusting your computer screen settings, or if you are using a device, try using a different reading app than the default one. I have not had any other commenters have problems with printing the pattern, but several have had problems on their kindles. Using a different app has solves that problem. I think it might be your computer or printer settings. Sorry, I am not very helpful!

  4. Ok I love your little shoe patterns and I’m very excited to make them I’m good at crocheting but I’m not very good at reading a pattern I am mostly self taught but have also learned through some friends and family so I’m having Some trouble with the bitty bow baby sandals. I’m working on the 3-6 mo pattern I’ve completed the sole and the bow but I’m stuck on the heel part b what does sc2tog mean I know sc means single crochet but I don’t understand tog could you please explain it to me. You didn’t have an instructional video to follow for this one I found it easier to follow the pattern for the flip flops in watching the video. Also my heel that I started working on doesn’t seem as wide as yours in the pictures maybe I did something wrong? Please help

    1. Thank you!
Sc2tog is a single crochet decrease or single crochet two together. Work a sc, leave one loop on the hook, work another sc, then pull yarn through all three loops. There are many how-to videos on youtube, just search “how to work sc2tog”.

I am not sure if you did it correctly, feel free to email me a photo of your work, or send me a photo on Facebook.

  5. Hi there! I love your work! I just had a baby (a boy) and happened to have him in a pair of booties that I made from another pattern/source when we went in for our four-week postpartum appointment at the birth center where he was born. All the ladies behind the front counter went crazy over his booties and insisted that I start making booties to sell in their little baby store in the foyer, and I was wondering if it would be all right for me to sell some booties made with your patterns? I could include your web address on my labels as well as any other information you would like added. Thank-you for clearly stating on your site that projects made from your patterns are saleable! So many patterns either don’t say anything about it or the pattern creator is unwilling to allow sales of a finished product. Thank-you, again, for creating such beautiful work!

  6. I love your bitty bow sandals parttern. Unfortunately I’m not very good at following patterns, but I’m good at fallowing visual and I was wondering, if you could post a video of a 9 to 12 mth pattern. I would really appreciate . Thank you

  7. do you really join 2 soles together, just for a thicker bottom? are there any sizes for 9-12 mo.? would it be about 4 3/4″
    thanks,
If you’re self taught-you do great work.
love your videos-so easy to understand

    1. yes, it makes it nice and thick, but you can do only one if you prefer. And yes, 9-12 is included in the pattern PDF, but it’s closer to 5” (when I make them, anyway!). Thanks so much for your nice comment!

  8. Hi Bethany
I made a pair off Bow Baby Sandals for my friend as a gift which other people
saw. They now requesting that I make them some as well. They are really beautiful. I have
now told others about your lovely site.
    Regards
    Gail

  9. For the body. When you say the heel facing downward count four to the right. You then do the single crochets into the slip stitches going around the shoe to the left…is that correct? If that is correct there are no single crochets around the back of the heel when you start the bow part of the body. or are the 33 single crochet supposed to be worked to the right around the back of the heel.think I’m confused

    1. You will be working with the right sides of the stitches out. So start there, but work down towards the heel, not up to the toe.

        1. The youtube video for this pattern is uploading this very minute, plus I have rewritten the pattern to be less confusing and will be updating it shortly. Check back in a few hours, so sorry!

          1. Thank you so much Bethany. I was able to make one last night using new pattern and the video. It was great. I am so proud of myself. I have been crocheting for years but mainly blankets, scarfs and headbands. My grandmother taught me when I was nine years old. I always told myself I couldn’t crochet baby shoes or clothes. My third grandchild is about to be born and I have made my four children blankets and also my twin grandbabies blankets and other items. I will now be making these shoes and other items from now on. Don’t ever tell yourself that you can’t do something unless you try and try again. Thank you so very much because I had ripped my first one out 4 times when you posted the updated pattern. Thanks again for posting free patterns so we can create these beautiful works of art that are more sentimental than anything. God bless!

          2. Great job! You are so welcome :) I am sorry for the frustration for the older version. This was an older pattern and my skills were not great back then, it was very confusing. I am so glad you liked it :) Congrats on the grand baby!

  10. Just finished the bitty bow sandals. Love them! Design was great, instructions were great. I made the 3-6 months for my 41/2 month baby. They fit perfectly. Can’t wait to make more of your designs. Thanks for sharing!!

    1. Thanks so much!! And you are so very welcome!! Thank you for your wonderful and sweet comment! Feedback like this always makes my day :)

  11. When I am making the heel on the back for some reason it never comes out centered. I always have it too far to the side. Can you help me with this

  12. You have great patterns. I crocheted the baby flip flops and they came out very nice.
I’m having some trouble with the heel on this one.
I know a few people have ask for a video… Will it be posted soon?

    Thanks,
    Angela

  13. i am stuck on the body of the bitty bow sandal. not sure how to do c and d, i have tried and taken it out 4 times. do you have a video that shows how to do it. i have not had this problem with any other pattern i have tried and i really love these little sandals.

    thanks julie

    1. c and d are increasing the width of the strap. But so it doesn’t just hang there, you are connecting it back into the shoe each time you come back down. So it works out like a washcloth, but you end the row by sl st into the next unworked sl st on the shoe, to attach it as you go.

  14. do you have a video for bitty bow sandals. i am stuck in the strap part. i do alot of crocheting and make alot of things ,but do not understand the part at the end of the strap–

    thanks Julie

  15. I’m confused about the last part of the body instructions in sz 0-3mo. “Sc 4, join with st”. What am I sc into? Can’t tell in the photos…
    Thank you!

    1. You are finishing the round. You should have 4 unworked sl sts, work 1 sc in each and join with the beginning of the round with a sl st.

  16. wonderful sandals. do you have a video for this also on youtube ? I am stuck with the heel and the toe area and need to see what your instructions are telling me what to do.
thanks for your help I love these sandals.
    Jan Smith @ injays@frontier.com

    1. Hi Jan! I don’t, but I am working on getting videos made for all my patterns. Let me know if you want me to help you figure it out on here though.

  17. Hi Bethany,
I’m just a little stuck with the instructions for the heel. Can you explain what you mean by “Start right where you joined with sl st”.
Just not sure where to start off.
    Thanks heaps.

    1. Yes, you won’t tie off, just start where you finished your last row, where you joined in the step previous. Nothing additional, just transition from the last step to the heel without working anything, or tying off or joining.

  18. I bought some Peaches and Cream brand yarn – my flip flops came out wayyyyy to big – Can you suggest which brand of yarn works best to make the smallest size?
