The cross stitch sc hat is worked using the cross stitch single crochet. This stitch is achieved by working the sc just slightly different, and it has a very pretty effect. Make this easy hat to practice this fun stitch, you will love it!
A few weeks ago, someone in the Facebook group shared a project using a new, pretty stitch called the cross stitch single crochet. I was intrigued, because I love the look of cross stitch and I was curious how the stitch was done.
(Spoiler alert, it’s way easy! )
This look is achieved by simply grabbing the top of the yarn instead of putting your hook under it to hook it though the stitch. It’s much easier to watch, so check out this video.
I also decided to do something a bit crazy and make the pom-pom out of faux sheepskin.
You can use my faux fur pom-pom tutorial and pattern to make them, but eyeball your cut about 1″ larger than the pattern, as the sheepskin is less thick.
It’s really plush! I am scouting for more colors because this might be my new favorite pom-pom. It even kinda looks like a very plush yarn pom-pom.

What you need: (affiliate links)
– 9 mm hook
– Brava Bulky (Black, White, Dove Heather, Cobblestone Heather)
– Darning Needle
Gauge: (Gauge Pattern)
Cross Stitch Sc Hat Brim:
1. Hdc in 2nd ch from hook. Hdc in each remaining ch. Turn. (5 sts)
2. Ch 1. Hdc in same st. Working in Back Loops Only, hdc in next 3 sts. Hdc in last st going through both loops. Turn. (5 sts)
Repeat row two until your band reaches:
about 20″ for man
about 19″ for teen/woman
You will get this measurement by gently stretching your band and measuring the length, not the pre-stretch length. You want the hat to be snug and due to differences in yarn stretchiness, I am not providing a row count. Instead, use your measuring tape. It should stretch 2 inches or more
Note: You can make the hat band longer to make the hat larger ( or visa versa).
Fold long piece in half and sl st up the side, making a band. Turn so the seam is on the inside and your loop is at the top.
1. Ch 1. Sc in across the top of the band, achieving approx. 55 – 60 sts. Join with a sl st.
2. – 3. Working a cross stitch sc, work a st in each st around. Join.
Join Cobblestone Heather.
4. – 9. Ch 1. Work a cross stitch sc in each st around. Join.

10. – 15. Ch 1. Work a cross stitch sc in each st around. Join.

Tie off, leave a long tail.
Closing the cross stitch sc hat:
Turn the hat inside-out. Using the tail, sew a loose running stitch across the top of the hat. Cinch it tight to close the hat and weave in the end well and firmly. Turn back right-side out.
Attach a pom-pom on top to finish.
