Lately, I have been spending my time between being totally exhausted and trying to get the baby’s room finished! I went with a neutral boho theme because I really wanted to incorporate as much crochet into it as possible (go figure!).
I feel real old during this 4th pregnancy and my body is choosing to be tired, while my brain in on overdrive wanting to do ALL THE THINGS.

Right now I have finished some hanging faux macrame rainbows (thinking of making them into a mobil), a fringy triangle garland to go above the bassinet, and just now these hanging baskets! It’s nice to have little things within reach, like a few diapers, bum cream and maybe a small toy or pacifier.

I decided to hang them on an accordion hat hanger (found here) for an eclectic look, and I love how it turned out. These baskets hang right above the changing table so I can easily grab those few essentials, BUT they could work in almost any space!

They could even work as a planter. How cute!

I LOVE the look of the black yarn with the cotton cording. It was my first attempted so the basket is a bit lumpy, but the contrast is just lovely. Exactly the look I was hoping for in the baby’s room!

I did a bit of experimenting with rope. I am a bit obsessed and spent more money than I care to admit on different types of rope. I just had to try all of them to make sure I was using the best one!

I decided that plain cotton cording works best with crochet. The yarn slides easily, which is necessary for these baskets. It also is soft enough that it won’t try to take over the shape when making something, but firm enough that your basket (or project) will be stiff and practical.
I have a short list of ideas for this cotton rope and I can’t wait to get them out before the Babe comes.

In case you are wondering, I tried 5mm hemp, twisted sisal rope, and polyester macrame rope. The hemp was okay but created a soft, flimsy basket that wasn’t quite usable. Sisal was extremely difficult to work with, it twisted terribly coming off its ball. I gave up after about 3 rounds. The polyester macrame rope was okay! But I still found the cotton cording to be the best. I found 3/17″ weight cotton clothesline at Walmart for $5, and it created beautifully sturdy baskets.

CROCHET BASKET INSTRUCTIONS:

Notes: Pattern is worked in continuous rounds (spiral). Be sure to use a stitch marker to indicate the end of each round.
Finished sizing of this pattern can vary widely based on your materials. The pattern sizing is approximate and based on the use of worsted cotton yarn and 3/17″ clothesline. Your base will be the approx. finished size of your basket. I have found cotton clothesline or other firm cotton cording to be the best material for stiff baskets.

SMALL BASKET:

FINISHED SIZE: 4″ diameter, 4″ tall

Begin by working a sl st around the rope. Ch 1 to begin.

1. Work 12 sc across your rope. Place end of rope behind and work a sc in the first st of the round to begin the next round and to connect the rope into a circle shape.

2. Work an additional sc in the same st for a total of 2. Work 2 sc in each remaining st of the round. (24 sts)

3. *Sc in next sts. Work 2 sc in next st* work 12 times. (36 sts)

4.  *Sc in next 2 sts. Work 2 sc in next st* work 12 times. (48 sts)

5. *Sc in next 3 sts. Work 2 sc in next st* work 12 times. (60 sts)

6. Sc in each st around, working through back loops only. (60 sts) (You may need to pull the rope slightly in this round to help the basket sides take shape upwards for the next several rows.)

7. – 16. Sc in each st around. (60 sts)

17.  Sc in next 50 sts. Work 18 sts across the rope, skipping 9 sts. sl st in last st of the round, not working around the rope. (69 sts)
Sl st in next 2 sts. Tie off.

CONSTRUCTION

You can secure the end of the rope by sewing it in place while you weave in your yarn end.
Using a sharp, metal darning needle, poke your end through the end of the rope as you weave in the end. Be sure to go in and out a few times to secure it.

Once it feels secure and your end is properly weaved in, trim the yarn end and trim the rope. For extra staying power, you can apply a small amount of hot glue to the back of the rope tail and press it down.

  1. Thank you so much for your blog! It is so helpful and gives great projects to try! I am relatively knew to crochet and looking forward to trying Amigurumi and some of these baskets!

    1. Maybe not, it would depend on how stiff the cord is. I got some from hobby lobby and it was quite soft, so that will make the baskets less stiff. But I am not sure what your cord feels like!
