1. Yarn Pom-Pom

This one is obvious of course, but if you are a first-time pom-pom maker, than I have an easy tutorial for you. BONUS: I also explain how to sew them on a hat so they don’t flop around!

2. Faux Fur Pom Pom

Once you learn how to make your own fur pom-poms you won’t be able to stop. I have loved experimenting with different piles of fur and they always turn out very lovely.

3. Sheepskin Pom-Pom

This one I tried on a whim last winter and I absolutely love the lush finished result. It looks like a super plush yarn pom-pom, but because it’s fabric, it has much better washability. Plus, you may be able to find faux sheepskin in lots of colors at your local fabric store, giving you lots of options. It’s a happy medium between fur and yarn pom-poms!

4. Crochet Pom-poms with Fur Yarn

This one is brand new. When I saw some new yarn at Knit Picks called Fable Fur, I knew exactly what I would try making with it. These crochet pom-poms turned out great!

2. Work 2 sc in each st around. (16 sts)
3. *Sc in next st. Work 2 sc in next st.* repeat all around. (24 sts)
4. – 8. Sc in each st around.

This basically makes a furry little cup.

From here, you can stuff your ends inside and leave them be. Then, using a separate strand of yarn (not fur yarn), sew a loose running stitch across the top opening. Stuff with Polyfil.

  1. Thank you for the pattern for the crocheted pom pom with the fur yarn. I had made a ‘chunky santa hat’ with super bulky (6) yarn. I made a regular pom pom for it. The thick yarn sheds terribly. I searched around on the internet and found your site. I used the bulky yarn and followed your pattern. I love the crocheted pom pom!!! I will be using it on all my caps from now on.

  2. I was intimidated to try the fur pom pom. I’ve worked (sewed) fur fabric in the past and know it can be a challenge. But this was SOOOOO easy!

My yarn pom poms usually end up dying in the washer/dryer.

And I’ve made the crocheted faux fur pom pom, but it is way to heavy to use on top of a hat. I’ve seen some make the typical yarn pom pom with the faux fur and hope to try that soon to see if it’s a bit lighter (and pray it holds together better than normal yarn.

  3. Oh. Great. Scott. I LOVE THE FURRY YARN POM POM. I may have to buy some yarn. 😏 And make a hat. 😁 Thank you for posting this!!

  4. Omg! I have so much weird faux yarn and NEVER thought to make poms with it! Such a simply brilliant idea! Thanks for the idea Beth!
