To get a total of 48 stitches, this is what I did: 1 DC in the next 2 stitches and 2 DC in the next stitch and repeated that pattern all the way to the end of the row. I hope I got it right.

I still don't get row 4. If I break it down, it says

DC 2, 2 DC in the next stitch - my understanding is that 2 DC in the first stitch and another 2 DC in the next stitch. This doesn't seem right to me because I will end up with more stitches. Kindly clarify.

Hi, I loved making this hat! My only problem was that I think I used yarn that was too thin, maybe? I was at 4.5” at the step 5 gauge check, but kept plowing on, instead of trying to figure out an increase. So the hat is just a beanie, instead of slouchy. But I have more yarn, and I’ll try the bottoms up version of this pattern next, with some red heart. Thank you!

You need to use the hook that allows you to meet the gauge. Go down a few hook sizes until you meet the gauge.
