If you have been following along with me for an extended period of time, you know that I have been a fan of Knit Picks yarn for a while. I found the perfect fingering weight wool for my Nativity and it’s so perfect, I just can’t bring myself to use anything else. I also have kept Brava Worsted in stock, as it’s a perfectly soft, everyday acrylic with so many uses (and I like that it’s not a “heavier” worsted like some acrylics are). Many of my older projects use Brava because it’s soft, affordable and has practically any color you could need.

I have been wanting to make a desert chic inspired Crochet Serape Hat set for a while. I really feel like I need some color in my life to break up the monotony of this cold, gray winter.  I am using Brava with this project because it had all the colors I needed (“Seashell” is one of my very favorite colors!) and the finished hat will have the perfect drape.
I also made a similar southwestern style cowl to match.

ADULT CROCHET HAT:

Note: To make your seam look less noticeable, finish the last sc with the color of yarn you will be using in the following row.  Then sl st and move on with the pattern.

With Black Ch 9
1. Hdc in 2nd ch from hook. Hdc in next 7 sts. Turn. (8 sts)
2. Ch 1. Hdc in same st. Hdc in next 6 sts in BLO. Hdc in last st, going through both loops. Turn. (8 sts)

Repeat step 2 until your band reached about 19″ stretched measurement. Very gently stretch the band to get the measurement. Don’t stretch too hard. Fold the piece in half and sl st it into a band. Flip the band so the seam is on the inside on the loop is at the top. Continue from here to make the hat body.

Hat Body:

Cut yarn, leave a long tail on Denim.

Closing the hat:

Turn hat inside-out. Thread the long tail into the darning needle. Sew a loose running stitch around the top of the hat. Once you meet back at the beginning, pull end, cinching the hold closed. Sew across it a few time to secure it in place and to weave in the end.

You can also top the hat with a pom-pom. (See FOUR WAYS to make them here). I was choosing between the Sherpa and Faux fur, and decided to go with fur.

ADULT CROCHET COWL :

(Go up three hook sizes from the hook you used to meet the gauge)
Use two strands. You can pull from two skeins or use the inside pull and outside pull at the same time.

Notes: You can either carry your yarn or string it along the back. Because the black parts are spread out, I recommend carrying it to keep the inside from being super messy.
I recommend that you work a “cross-stitch sc” for this cowl to allow the stitches to line up a bit better. See how to do this here.

1. Work a sc foundation 78 sts. Join with a sl st with the top loops of the first st (the bottom of the stitches won’t meet, but you can sew it together once the cowl is complete).

12. – 30.
Begin working the graph. Work in a “cross stitch” sc so your stitches line up better. (Watch the video below the stitch abbreviations)

Begin each row with a ch 1 and end each row by joining with a sl st. Treat each square on the graph as a sc.
Work the graph TWICE.

Cut white. Pull up Black.
