This crochet plaid blanket CAL has been a long time coming! I have mentioned this before but I am actually a fairly  slow crocheter compared to many. I can’t seem to get myself going faster, so projects like blankets and garments take me a very long time. I am so excited that this blanket is finished and I can finally share it with you because I have been working on it for several months!

I am so pleased with the result. I am even more excited to see YOUR crochet plaid patchwork blanket. I love seeing you take my patterns and add your own creativity. It’s awesome!

My kids are fighting over who gets the blanket and to be totally honest I might keep it for myself. I have been thinking of lining the back with some snuggly flannel.

So I decided to start this week out with our familiar, basic buffalo plaid technique. Today’s squares will be a buffalo plaid square, with the blocks comprising of 5 dc sts wide and two rows tall. You won’t have to carry the unused color for this square(yay!)

You can create any size blanket that you would like, but for the purpose of this CAL, I will give instructions for making the blanket exactly like mine. Of course you can change this to fit your own liking and tastes. I am looking forward to seeing your style and unique touch!

Make 7 squares: 4 Red and Black, 3 Black and White (instructions are written for the Black and White). For the Red and Black, use WINE instead of Gray, RED instead of White, and use BLACK where it says black.

  1. I’m sorry to bother you, but I see what I think is a typo. In your directions for LARGE BLOCK PLAID SQUARE, Row 4 it reads as follows :
    4. With whine, Ch 2. Dc in same st. Dc in next st. Switch to Gray. Dc in next 5 sts. Switch to White. Continue alternating between white and gray every 5 sts for next 25 sts. Switch to Gray. Dc in last two sts. Turn. (34 sts)

Should the first color be white, not whine?

  2. How do you switch from color to color? What method works best for this? I currently use where you tie the strands together but notice that you say “drop” colors.

    1. Hello Kim! I used Red Heart Soft, but you can use any medium weight yarn. Even other weights will work, your blanket will simply end up being bigger or smaller.

  3. Hi, I have looked over what I have done over and over again. I swear I haven’t done it wrong however the geometric is 18 rows higher but the antlers (which is where I’ve gotten to) is 35 rows high. In the picture of your blanket they all look the same?!?! What am I missing here? Thank you for your time AND this awesome pattern!

  4. I really love this blanket and want to make it for a Christmas gift this year. I haven’t done a blanket like this before with multiple blocks. Is it easy to swap out blocks? I’d like to add a block or two with a bear outline. Is that doable?

    1. Absolutely! You can also change the size by making more or fewer blocks. I would recommend lining all your block up on your floor before you begin sewing them together so you know it’s exactly what you want.

  5. So I’m confused what side will be the right and what side to be the wrong side, lol. What side should my starting tail be on right or left?

  6. I wish I could post a picture here. I made this in Queen size and it is stunning. Thank you for this gorgeous pattern. I bought the pattern so I could print the graphs and mark them up.

    1. Thank you so much Jane! I would LOVE to see it! If you are on Instagram you can post a photo and tag me @whistleandivy or you can email it to me! Bethany (at) whistleandivy (dot) com.
