Welcome to Day Five of our Plaid Blanket CAL! Today’s square is a lovely crochet plaid mountain square, featuring a modern mountain shape in plaid colors. It brings together a rustic shape with the buffalo plaid color work. This CAL is brought to you by Red Heart, all creatives, patterns and opinions are 100% my own. Welcome to the last day of making crochet squares for our blanket! I saved this crochet plaid mountain square for very last for two reasons.  One, because it’s my favorite. It turned out so cute that I might have to make another blanket accenting these squares a bit more. Two, this square is a labor of love and I thought it best to save it until the the home stretch of our plaid blanket CAL.

Don’t be intimidated, it’s not difficult. However, the color changes will slow you down quite a bit and you will have to go into making this square knowing that your yarns will get a bit tangled.

Take it slow.

Take time after each row to untangle your ends.

Use bobbins to make it easier.

Read through the pattern notes, I have included some helpful tips there so you can work the graph a bit easier.

You can do this! It’s so worth adding these pretty plaid mountain peaks to your blanket.

Ch does not count as a stitch, work the first st of each row in the same st as the chain.

Make 3 CROCHET PLAID MOUNTAIN PEAKS SQUARES

1. Using Light Heather Gray, work a sc foundation with 34 sts (approx. 9″) Turn.

2. – 35.
Work the graph, treating each square as a sc.

Notes: Make 2 bobbins of gray before beginning to use for the gray space between the peaks. You can use the gray from both ends of your main skein instead of separate bobbins for gray on the sides of the mountains.
Drop colors once you complete the stitches, don’t carry them past where they are on the graph.
When you are working the middle gray, you will need to carry both colored plaid yarns as you work the few gray stitches.
When you change from red to black color rows in the plaid part, you ned to cut the yarns and rejoin when you need it agin.
On row 21, you can stop using the bobbin by working with the main gray, carrying through that one Wine sts, and continuing with it until the middle peak. For the other side, you will switch when you reach the one black st, that way you will have the main gray to work with for the rest of the square. When you go back across the one black sts, pick up black and carry it so you have it when you need it in the middle peak.

BORDER:
With Gray (or color of your background): Sc evenly all around the square, working 3 sc in each corner. Weave in ends.

The edges will be a bit wonky, as I mentioned in the antlers square pattern, but it truly adds a beautiful touch to this blanket. As I mentioned before, take this square nice and slow!

Please take the time to block your squares before you begin sewing them together. It makes a big difference! This square especially would benefit from a good blocking.
Tomorrow you will sew the blanket together.

  1. I have made two of the mountain squares and they are noticeably larger than the others. I think it needs to be made with 32 stitches to narrow it. The height seems OK. I do not think I can block it to 9″ X 9″.

        1. I have done the buffalo plaid squares, tartan and geometric and done the sc on the edges. They are all beautifully the same size. It would be easier to just make some 32 st. mountain squares and use the larger ones for the centers of pillows or in a table runner perhaps.
I do love this afghan and it will be prominently displayed in my living room!

  2. Thank you so much for this design!!
I’m a little confused on how to do the bobbin part of this. I made the pattern, and am about to start my second square and i’m slightly confused by dropping colors. Do you have a tutorial you can suggest that shows how to drop and pick up colors using the bobbins?
