Some of you may remember my Camper Pillow from last year. I love how it turned out but I wanted to take the colorowork up a notch.  I figured it would be so fun to add some plaid and release it during Plaid Week this year.
Isn’t it adorable?

I chose to use Paintbox Simply Chunky Yarn to make this pillow because the color palette is pretty unbeatable. There are so many colors, it makes it a lot of fun to do crochet color work.
I have only recently started using yarns from Lovecrafts.com but I am extremely pleased with everything I have used!

I have used Paintbox Cotton Aran with my Plaid Bandana Bib pattern from this year’s Plaid Week and Paintbox Cotton DK with my Apple Watch band. I am thrilled with these yarn lines. I also used Lovecrafts exclusive yarns with my Modern Baby Bib pack.

Check out the cotton line here (so many colors!)

I loved designing this graph. If you haven’t worked colorwork before, don’t be intimidated. It’s a lot about managing your ends mostly. Honestly, you just go in mentally prepared to having tangles,  that alone can prevent most all frustration you may have. The end product is totally worth it, this plaid camper is so cute!

FRONT PLAID CAMPER GRAPH

Start with a chain 47. Begin row 1 in the second chain from hook.
1. – 56. Work the graph. Treat each square as one sc. Begin each round with a ch 1 and work the 1st stitch in the same st as the chain. Turn at the end of each row.

This video may help with working the graph and changing color: (you will need to disable your Adblocker for the video to load)

Please read through the graph notes/suggestions for helpful tips on working the graph.

Graph Notes: When you start the graph in row 6, use two bobbins of dark gray for each gray part (the wheel and the hitch) and carry the white through the whole row.
When you start the plaid color work in row 10, make a bobbin of white for each side of the trailer, as well as bobbins of the plaid colors for either side of the door.

row 11 – carry wine through to the tire.
Row 12 – Carry wine through to the gray trailer jack.

Row 13- carry black through the top row of gray of the wheel.
row 15 carry wine to the end of the row so you have it in row 16.

row 21 – you can start carrying the cream through the door, through the few stitches that are gray, so the rest of the camper will be worked with the same bobbin/strand of cream.

Starting in row 39, use bobbins for the Stormy Gray parts of the graph, but carry the same Slate Gray yarn through the whole row.

STRIPED BACK PIECE:
(there is no need to cut the yarns when you finish the two rows of either color. Simply drop the yarn and pull it back up when you need it. The yarns will run up the side of the square, but will be covered when you sew the pillow together.)

Start with a ch 47, using Champagne White.
1. Starting in the 2nd ch from hook, sc in each ch across. Turn. (46 sts)
2. Ch 1. Sc in each st across. Turn. (46 sts)
Drop Champagne White. Join Red Wine.
3. – 4. Ch 1. Sc in each st across. Turn. (46 sts)
Drop Red Wine. Pull up Champagne White.
5. – 6. Sc in each st across. Turn. (46 sts)
7. – 56. Repeat rows 3-6 respectively.
Tie off, weave in ends.

(there is no need to block your pieces because the pillow form will stretch them, giving them a nice shape.)

WINDOW:  (separate piece)
with Slate Gray
Ch 7
1. Sc in 2nd ch from hook. Sc in each remaining ch. (6 sts) Turn.
(carry gray through each row)
2. Ch 1. Sc in same st and next st. Switch to Champagne White. Sc in next 2 sts. Switch to Slate Gray. Sc in last 2 sts. Turn.
3. – 4. Ch 1. Sc in same st. Switch to Champagne White. Sc in next 4 sts. Switch to Slate Gray. Sc in last st, (6 sts)
Drop Champagne White. Turn.
5. With Slate Gray, sc in each st across.
Turn.
Join Stormy Gray, sc a border all around working 3 sc in each corner. Join with the first st.
Leave a long tail.

WREATH: (Separate piece)
with Racing Green:
Ch 5
Sl st with first chain making a ring.
Hdc 10 into the ring. Join with first hdc. Tie off.
Leave a long tail.

Using the tails, sew the window and wreath to your front pieces like so: (the window was worked up side down, so be sure to place it correctly)

I also had some festive mini pom-poms on hand, which I added to the wreath and the window. You can either sew them on with a needle and thread or simply glue them on with hot glue. Both methods work well.

Also, add some contrast to the tire by working an X shape in the middle. Do 2 -3 passovers to make it thicker.

Next, sew the front piece to the back piece by working a round of sc, working through both layer (use any color you prefer).  Begin on one of the raw sides and work across 3 sides, working 3 sc in each corner.

Next, insert your pillow form. Finish your round of sc, sewing the pillow completely shut.

Tie off and weave in your ends.

  1. I just adore this design.
    You are so artistic.
I have shortie jammies with little girl camp trailer.
I would love to join a girl Caravan and see AMERICA while it still exists!
    Thank you, Beth. ❤

  2. I have a ton of worsted weight yarn I’d love to use up. Could I hold 2 strands together for this project?

    1. It’s actually more of a heavy worsted than a true bulky, but you could give it a try! Make sure to make a gauge swatch to see if it’s close. You could go down a hook size or two if you need.
