The bugs are loose. The hiding places are behind the things they are sitting on in the photo. So the two ladybugs will each hide behind their respective leaves (they are only sewed down at the stem), the grasshopper hides behind the bush, and the ants hide under the rock, both of which are sewed at the bottom only, so it is like a flap. If you read the post, it explains that the hiding places are sewn at the bottom to make them into flaps.
