The Pioneer Rug – A Free Crochet Pattern

November 25, 2016 by Abbey Swanson 12 Comments

The Pioneer Rug is a guest post written by Abbey from The Firefly Hook. You can find her on Facebook, Instagram and Pinterest.

The Pioneer Rug

My kids and I recently listened to all the Little House on the Prairie books. I love connecting to that time in history when people lived off the land and depended on each other to survive.

My son Benjamin especially enjoyed listening to all of Laura’s adventures. He connected to her wild and free spirit and wishes he could be friends with her.

It’s truly special when you kids connect deeply with something you held so dear as a child.

bluegreenstripe-rug-7weba

I love simplicity. I find it difficult to achieve, but I envy the Ingalls’ small Christmas celebrations. Everyone adored each small part because that’s all there was! One small gift or one special dessert wasn’t taken for granted.

I remember when the Ingalls girls pooled their money together to buy a gift for Pa: store-bought suspenders. Many gifts were handmade: socks, dolls, crocheted collars.

Remember in The Long Winter when Laura and her friends would sit together in Pa’s shop while they knit and crocheted lace collars? The crochet-lover in me wished I could sit and crochet with Laura and her friends as they watched people passing by on the street. I wish I could find a pattern for the collars they made!

In the spirit of a handmade Christmas, let me introduce the Pioneer Rug.

Crocheted with a 12mm hook and three strands held together, you can whip up one of these in a few hours. What’s more – I made this 28” rug for $7.00!

You can tailor the colors and size depending on who you are making the gift for and make it the perfect addition to any home, accommodating any style!

Enjoy!

Crochet Super Chunky Wool Rug

July 25, 2016 by Bethany 20 Comments

Happy Monday everyone, I hope you are ready to start a new week! I am having a hard time today. I spent last week on the mountain with some youth from my church. It was a wonderful experience to be a camp leader for those amazing girls! Even though I missed my sweet kids, it was hard to come down off that beautiful mountain and away from the lovely fresh air. I did enjoy the opportunity to wear my striped hipster beanie since it got a bit chilly at night, but since I am back to 100 degree weather, I am sharing a non-wearable today: a super chunky wool rug.

Free Crochet Pattern: Super Chunky Wool Rug | Make this pretty and squishy wool rug in just a few minutes with chunky yarn and a large hook.

Super Chunky Crochet Rug

Good morning everyone!
If you have been following the last few months, you may know I have been smitten with chunky crochet projects, and have made several: this 30-Minute Cowl, this Ric-Rac Scarf and this Granny Stitch Hat are a few of my favorites. I am still loving chunky yarn, but since spring is around the corner, I decided I need to switch my focus to projects that aren’t meant to keep you warm.  When I tried out the 100% wool super chunky Tuff Puff yarn by Knit Picks a few weeks ago, I knew it would make a perfect rug. It is so soft and squishy under your feet, and the colors are brilliant and beautiful. This super chunky crochet rug would look so pretty in a bathroom or kitchen, or even in a child’s room.

Free Crochet Pattern: Super Chunky Crochet Rug | Make this beautiful chunky rug quickly. This rug is perfect for any room in your home!

Free Crochet Pattern: Super Chunky Crochet Rug | Make this beautiful chunky rug quickly. This rug is perfect for any room in your home!

What you need:
-Super Chunk yarn (Tuff Puff by Knit Picks in Mint, Silver and Conch)
-Size P Hook

This rug uses basic stitches, and because the yarn is so chunky and thick, this rug works up in a snap. Also, the size is easily customizable, and you can make more (or less) rounds to change the size.
I can’t wait to see what you come up with!

I am guest posting at Pretty Provdence today, so be sure to click over and get the free crochet pattern!

Be sure to share your Super Chunky Crochet Rug (and all your other projects!) in the Whistle and Ivy Facebook group. I would love to see your WIPs!

Twenty- Twenty: A year in review

December 31, 2020 by Bethany 2 Comments

This year was a doozy, we had some struggles, heartaches and mental lows, but a few bright sides as well. I hope you take some time to reflect on any positive things that happened this year, as we more forward and upward into 2021! And be sure to save any of these Whistle and Ivy patterns you may have missed this year.

I always spend December reflecting over my detailed goal sheet that I wrote up the previous year. It’s fun to see where I was when I began the year and how far I came to meeting the goals I had written down.

This year has been a bit different. Most of my business goals were woefully unattained this year. Many of my personal ones as well.

It seems as thought all bets are off and all schedules have gone out the window this year!

I decided to write down a few different things this year, some bright sides.

We all travel through life in different situations and with different hardships, and I find comparison to be a extremely unhelpful exercise. What I do find helpful is looking back and seeing where there was light and love.

Will you do this exercise with me? Get a pretty piece of paper and write down all the good things, the bright sides, that happened in 2020. Keep them, just as you would a goal sheet, so you can reflect on them.

Here are some of mine:

Health: Through all of this, our family has had our health. Not only that, but due to social distancing and masks, I had only ONE cold the entire year, when normally I have about 1 per month.

Family Time: We have missed friends dearly during this time. But, I have seen the relationship between my older two children blossom and grow. They have always gotten along okay, but they see each other as playmates and friends (most of the time) and it has been wonderful to witness.

Forced Prioritizing: I have always been one to stress over my time management. I am frequently found rushing around the house, snapping at my family as I try to meet a looming deadline. This year forced me to slow down. I didn’t have a choice! My kids needed help with school. Cubbie needed to be held and cuddled. And as crazy as it sounds, my whole world didn’t implode when I didn’t live up to my self-imposed “shoulds”.

I truly did NOT meet any of my business goals this year, but the forced prioritizing made me let go of some of the “shoulds”, and I found many of them were actually quite unnecessary!
I am excited to move into 2021 with my new plan of action and to bring all my crochet ideas to fruition, bring my the simplicity of crochet designing. ❤️

So in case you missed any of these patterns from 2020, here is my pattern design list.

Before we dive in, I want to remind you that ALL of my ad-free PDFs, premium patterns, videos, courses, graphics and cut files are all in my Endless Bundle All-Access pass.

THE ENDLESS BUNDLE

Because you are
A  MAKER

Cross hooks

We all started when someone handed us a hook and yarn and told us we could make something real with it.

Then we became MAKERS.

We became ARTISTS.

We became CREATIVES.

Do you remember the first project you completed? I hope you kept that special first item.

What about that feeling of elation when your handmade baby gift is opened and the room fills with a collective  "Awwww!"

Making is in our being, and crochet connects us with the part that wants to CREATE SOMETHING.

Sometimes all  you need is one more piece.

You have the talent.
You have the skill.
Now you can have all the patterns.

THE MODERN PARENT OR GRANDPARENT

As a mother myself, I know how rewarding it is to be able to create homemade items (clothes, toys, decor, etc.) for my kids and family. COMMUNITY ROCKSTARS

Totally worth it! The price is worth it for having access to great patterns that make crocheting trendy and that go against the thought that all crocheted things are “grandma-esque”. No need to purchase individual patterns or create folders for organizing them, it’s all done for you! The crocheters one stop shop.
-- Katherine

This saves so many hours scrolling Raverly and Etsy for the perfect pattern!                                                                                -Johanna

There is always a pattern you can work on whether you have 10 minutes or a couple hours. Everything is available with the click of a mouse (or finger) and the price can't be beat for unlimited accessibility.
