A few weeks ago I was browsing on Wish (it’s a direct from China deal site) and I randomly came across some super bulky yarn. It was SO CHEAP. But I got really nervous reading the reviews, they were rather hit or miss (as a lot of the items are on Wish). So I ended passing on it. However, a few days later I came across a similar product on eBay. The yarn I found was similar to the super bulky yarn that I saw on Wish. This time I decided to just try it.
And now I am wearing a fab Super Bulky Crochet Cowl, so I would say that I gambled and won.
I gotta say, I was very pleasantly surprised. Yes, it takes a little over 3 weeks to arrive but it was incredibly inexpensive. If you want some fancy bulky yarn and are willing to wait for it, then you should give this yarn a try. Plus that super slow shipping is FREE!
Although it says “wool” in the title, it is not, in fact, made from wool. I thought maybe it was when I bought it, but upon closer inspection, it’s definitely not. This might be very good news for those of you who only use vegan yarn or are allergic to wool and animal fibers. It’s so soft and squishy, I absolutely love it. I am not above acrylic yarn, especially when it’s so SO soft. The yarn came exactly as shown in the photo, in a bulky hank. The gray has a bit more blue in it than it looked online, but it’s still a very nice color.
So what to make with my squishy, super bulky yarn? This is the first time I have tried anything so huge, so I started small with this easy and FAST cowl. First, you need a super big hook. A 30 mm to be exact. Wowza.
Next, you will need to work a few practice stitches because it takes a bit of getting used to. I need to hold my yarn a bit differently. Normally I twist my hook while I am working, letting it do all the work. But this extreme yarn requires a bit of an adjustment and the hook isn’t able to do much of the work.
But it works up so fast! It’s so much fun!

SUPER BULKY CROCHET COWL

What you need:
– 1 1/2 hanks –>Super Bulky Yarn
– 30mm Hook
Abbreviations: US Terms
Ch – chain
Sc – single crochet
Hdc – Half Double Crochet
Sl st – Slip Stitch
St – stitch
Ch 20.
Careful to now twist the chain, sl st into first ch forming a loop.
1. Ch 1. Sc in each st around. Join with a sl st. (20 sts)
2. Ch 1. Working through back loops only, hdc in each st around. Join with a sl st. (20 sts)
3. – 6. Repeat 1 and 2 respectively.
Tie off and weave in end.
Can you believe you just made a cowl with 6 rows? So awesome. It’s also very easily adjustable. If you want it to hang lower around your neck, work a longer foundation chain. I you want it taller or shorter, work more or less rows.
One more thing: I recommend wearing it upside-down, with the last row on the bottom and foundation chain at the top. It wears better with the stretchy end at the bottom!
