It’s been so hard to crochet this week! Firstly, I haven’t felt very well, and secondly, there is so much that needs to be done around the house and yard. I have also been going through old posts and trying to bring some uniformity to all my patterns, which has proved to be very time consuming.  I have developed a style over the years, but my older crochet patterns look a bit out of place! Today’s free crochet pattern is the Faded Stripes Slouchy Hat. It holds a bit of sentimental value; my Hipster Slouchy, the bottom-up version of this hat, was my very first design. It’s been updated a few times over the years (here is the updated version), but is the same pattern. And I DO try to listen to your comments and ideas, so I know some of you prefer to work a hat from the top down, so this is for YOU!

  1. Hi, I loved making this hat! My only problem was that I think I used yarn that was too thin, maybe? I was at 4.5” at the step 5 gauge check, but kept plowing on, instead of trying to figure out an increase. So the hat is just a beanie, instead of slouchy. But I have more yarn, and I’ll try the bottoms up version of this pattern next, with some red heart. Thank you!

  2. I used an I hook and at row 5 mine measured 6″. So I stopped increasing at 72 stitches. But on that last round I did a normal 2 by 4 increase. I hope that doesn’t matter to the final product.
    ???

  3. Hi I’m having trouble on row 5. Ok it says chain 2, double crochet 2 , 2 double crochet in the next stitch. I keep having more stitches than what’s needed for that row…
I do 2 double crochets in each stitch then 2 double crochets in the rest of the stitches ?

    1. Row 4 or row 5? For row 5 you will work 3 dc, each in their own stitch, followed my an increase. Then you repeat the whole sequence all the way around. Does that make sense?

  4. Hi…
I am trying your pattern for the first time. I an having trouble with Row 4. It says chain 2, Dc 2, 2 dc in next st. The chain 2 is self explanatory, but I am ending up with more than 48 stitches at the end of Row 4. Where the instructions say Dc 2, 2 dc in next stitch, what does that mean ?? Is it Dc 2 in same stitch and then 2 dc together in the next stitch ?? Help me please !!!

    1. hello! You work 2 dc, each in their own stitch, followed by in increase: working 2 dc in the same st. BLO means back loops only, so you will work in the loop in the top that is farthest from you.

      1. I still don’t get row 4. If I break it down, it says

DC 2, 2 DC in the next stitch – my understanding is that 2 DC in the first stitch and another 2 DC in the next stitch. This doesn’t seem right to me because I will end up with more stitches. Kindly clarify.

        1. To get a total of 48 stitches, this is what I did: 1 DC in the next 2 stitches and 2 DC in the next stitch and repeated that pattern all the way to the end of the row. I hope I got it right.

  5. This is great! I’ve never really had a preference for where I start hat, but this beautiful and perfect for Spring.

And I know how you feel about updating older posts, I’m working on the same thing right now and it’s much more work than I expected it to be! It’ll all be worth it though, so good luck!
