To be perfectly honest, I wasn’t sure if I would get around to making this Women’s Crochet Hooded Cowl. I started with the ribbed cowl and it was taking so long I started to get discouraged and put it on the back burner.
For a year.
Then I reassessed, tried a larger hook and made a bit more progress a bit more quickly. A few more requests from readers finally put a fire under me and I got it finished!

I decided to go with the same yarn I used for the Baby Hooded Cowl and the Toddler Hooded Cowl. The drape is fantastic, it’s super soft and the wool blend makes it super warm too. I wish I was a better model, these photos don’t quite do it justice. It’s very comfortable to wear and is snug enough that you aren’t constantly adjusting it.

I could see it in burgundy, too.

Turn hood right-side out (seam on the inside). Turn cowl wrong-side out, with seam on the outside. Place the hood inside the cowl, lining up the bottom. Orient it so the seam on the hood matches up with the seam on the cowl.

What do you think? It’s pretty simple, although it’s a tad more time consuming than a hat. I do love the look of the grit stitch!

  1. Hi there, I’m very confused at the hood, is it just one long tube (the hood and cowl together) I don’t understand how the hood and cowl are supposed to connect to create the first picture on here, when the instructions seem to just be leading to a tube of fabric?

    1. The cowl is a tube. The hood is folding in half to create a hood shape: seam on top, fold at the back of the head, open at the bottom where it is sewn to the cowl.

  2. So besides folks that dont swatch gauge out, wouldnt it be possible to say your hook sozes you used so this doesnt mislead others? I see no where it tells you.

  3. Love this pattern! Thank you so much for sharing with us. So happy I found your page. Although I have a longer list to make now…ha ha

    1. Hook size and yarn do not determine finished size, the GAUGE does. Did you work a practice gauge swatch before beginning to ensure the hook you are using is the right one to make the hooded cowl the right size?

      1. I agree, Bethany. The time spent making a Swatch is time well spent. My friend and I used the SAME pattern, hook size & yarn (brand\type) but our projects are completely different sizes! Our tension is different so the sizes of both our final projects were different (her’s is larger).

After 3 failed projects (other patterns), we realized that making a Swatch actually SAVES TIME (by not wasting it)!

        Nice pattern, thanks for sharing!

    2. I found using the finished size helped me. So since the pieces were rectangles, I didn’t go by rows, I went by length/width. Finished product shows my method worked great.

  4. Maybe I’m missing something in the pattern, but for the hood, if you skip the stitches then the number of stitches will decrease each row how do you keep it at 93 stitches????

      1. I like this pattern except it was not clear about the hood. I did a sc, then a dc in next stitch, then skipped a stitch. It, of course, didn’t work. Then I did a sc, then a dc, and no skipped stitch. This seemed to work ok and looks pretty. Wish I had known to sc and dc in same stitch.

  5. is there a way to make this shorter/smaller for adult. I have no hair so I don’t need the room for hair… love this pattern

  6. I just finished the toddler hooded cowl for my cousin and I’m now making a matching one for my aunt. I do have to say, though, i think i used too big of yarn for this project, because I was able to wear it, and I’m 14!

Anyway, these patterns are really pretty and I might end up making myself a grey one of these once I see how my aunt’s turns out. Thanks for the beautiful patterns!!

    1. I am glad you liked it! Yes, it’s a struggle, things can turn out differently that you think. I am surprised though, I have a rather loose gauge, so people usually complain that my patterns are too small! I made myself one as well (I have a pattern for an adult) and it’s SO comfy.
Happy crocheting, Jane! Thanks for stopping by <3
