I have graphs on the brain lately. My 8-bit Heart Slouchy was the first of many ideas. In fact, I am working on a c2c graphgan, which will hopefully be ready in a month or so (Stay tuned it’s going to be a fun one!).   The idea for this Crochet Rainbow Shamrock Slouchy came as I was designing a terrible mash between rainbows and plaid (it didn’t end well). I decided to go with ONE idea, and it turned out so pretty! It’s themed St. Paddy’s Day, but could be worn all winter/fall long.

Pattern Note: To switch color, you will work the dc as normal until you have the last 2 loops on the hook. Finish the dc by yarning over with the new color and pulling through 2 remaining loops.

1. Magic Ring. Ch 2. Dc 10 into ring.
2. Ch 2. Dc 2 in each st around.  Join with sl st.(20 sts)
3. Ch 2. *Dc. 2 Dc in next st* repeat all around. Join with sl st. (30 st)
4. Ch 2. *Dc. 2 dc in next st* repeat all sound.  Join with sl st. (45 sts)
5. Ch 2. *Dc 2. 2 dc in next st* repeat all around.  Join with sl st.(60 sts)
6. Ch 2. 2 Dc in same st. Dc 3. 2 dc in next st. *Dc 5. 2 dc in next st* work 8 times. 2 dc in last 2 sts. (72 sts) Join with sl st.
Gague check- Should be approx. 6″ diameter

7. Ch 2. Dc 22 (switch to pink on last st)
From here you will begin the graph. Remember, TWO dc will equal ONE square on the graph.
For instance. The first row of the graph starts with 3 pink squares, so you will work 6 dc with pink.
You will carry the gray thought all the color changes. For ease of use, you can use bobbins (they will come in handy for the pink, purple and red rows, especially). If you decide to not use bobbin, be sure to work over the yarn. For instance. When you finish with the first row of blue, your blue yarn end will be to the left and you need it on the right. Simply pull it over (loosely) and start the blue stitches where they start, and then work over the end the same way you would carry the yarn. You will be working over the carried yarn (the gray) and the yarn end (blue).

If you worked the ends in, you shouldn’t have strings across the pattern on the inside.

So, yes. There are some ends to weave in here. But it will hopefully be worth it!

  1. A little confused on row 5. If you do 2 dc in each stitch around that gives you way more than 60 sts. I also tried it with 1 dc then 2 dc in the next st all the way around and that still gives you more than 60 sts
    Am I doing something wrong?

  2. Hi Bethany!
Would a half double crochet work with this also? I am thinking that it shouldn’t make it much taller or wider, just thicker. What is your opinion?
    Thanks so much!

  3. Just made one and posted it to Ravelry with your link! My daughters are in Irish music lessons and they are playing at the North Texas Irish Festival. If it is cool enough someone will be wearing mine. ☘️

  4. Hi Bethany, I love this.
I’m trying to make your 8 bit heart beat but am getting super duper frustrated with it.
How on earth do you get your stitches to stand straight on each other, however I try it my stitches are always slightly off and my heart does not line up properly.
    Help!

  5. This has such a cool effect! I’m learning graphs right now, but I find that I can still see the carried color through my stitches. So, with this pattern, mine would have the gray showing inside the colored stitches and the colors showing through the gray. It’s so frustrating and messy. How do I stop that from happening?

    1. Yes I understand! It’s hard to explain, but you need to carry the yarn behind the stitches. Not on top. Does that make sense? Lay it behind and out of sight, so when you work it, it is worked right behind the two loops of the stitch you are working into. Maybe I need to do a video. Does this make sense?

  6. A couple of questions – is one ball of the dove heather enough for one hat?
And they’re out of rouge on the site!!! Do you have another color/brand suggestion close to that? I really want to try to churn one of these out before St. Paddy’s Day. We have a party to go to for a change!
