This granny square cowl is a pattern that I designed about 18 months ago, but I am republishing it here so you can find it easier. It is very cozy, and quite easy to whip up, especially if you love making granny squares.

This cowl is really a template, you could use the idea, your favorite granny square and change the shape and colors to fit your preferences. It was very fun to make and I would like to make another one that is less loose around the neck, and maybe taller. Easy to do!

What you need: (affiliate links)
– Size I Hook (or hook to achieve a 5″ square
– Brava (Medium Weight Yarn) in 5 colors
(You will need less than a skein of each color)
– Dove Heather

Abbreviations: US Terms
Ch – chain
Sc – single crochet
Dc – Double Crochet
Hdc – Half Double Crochet
Sl st – Slip Stitch

The gauge is not super important, but having the square about 5″ will help with your sizing. I like to mix up my colors, but you are more than welcome to make all your granny squares the same.
Once you have finished the squares and have taken care of the tails, sew them together this way:
Line two squares up, fronts facing each other. Start in the corner sc, the middle of the 3 worked in the corner. Working through the back loops ONLY of both squares (the loop closest to you, and the loop farthest from you), sc across the side and work the last st in the middle of the 3 sc the corner on the other side. This will cause a tall sc seam in the back (pictured), but a nice, neat join on the front.
When you have twelve joined (2 rows of 6), you can join the two ends together using the same sc method, forming your cowl. Be sure to fold your piece so that right sides are facing in, so the seam will be on the inside as well.
You can be finished here if you want a thinner cowl, or you can make it taller by working a few rows on the top and bottom. To make your cowl exactly like mine, join the yarn at any join, and work 2 rows of dc stitches, and 1 row of sc around. Repeat for the other side.
