It’s really nice when the baby outgrows the diaper bag. I won’t lie, I hate carrying that big thing around. It’s obviously essential when the baby is small and you need everything except the kitchen sink to run to the grocery store. However, once I switched over to a smaller bag, I noticed another problem: mashed diapers. I don’t know why this bugs me so much, but when I put a flat, crisp diaper in my bag, and pull out a mashed, matted diaper only hours later (that can NOT be re-flattened) I get super annoyed. This happened, of course, with my first which is why I made myself a crochet diaper pouch to carry my crisp, fresh-from-the-package diapers in my not-diaper bag.

Unfortunately, the first one never made it on the blog. I am not quite sure why not, but I was looking through a folder on my computer labeled “Working on Patterns” and found it! I had lost my original diaper pouch, so I was happy to find the pattern and make another one.

This is my first one from 3 years ago! I made with two different kinds of yarn, and I don’t recommend that (haha!)

Since this was the second one I made, I made one major improvement. I decided to go with 100% cotton. Acrylic works, but this little pouch is going to see A LOT of action. My first one got real fuzzy real fast, and this cotton one will fare better, I believe.

What you need: (affiliate links)
-2 skeins of Dishie Cotton Yarn (Flamingo, Blush, Navy)
(optional: a bit extra yarn of a contrasting color for border)
G Hook
-2 Chunky Buttons
-Needle and Thread

Ch 45.
1. Hdc in 2nd ch from hook. Hdc 43. Turn. (44 sts)
2. – 30.  Ch 1. Hdc in same st. Hdc 43. Turn. (44 sts)

Note: I alternated colors every 4 rows, but you can make yours a solid color, too.

Without tying off, turn your pice 90 degrees clockwise. Work 2 sc in same st where you left off (for a total of 3 sts in the corner). Sc all around the piece, trying to space your sts as evenly as possible. Tie off.

Fold your piece in half, with the rows going horizontally. Sl st along the top and bottom, leaving the long side un-sewn.

Strap: Make 2
Ch 22.
1. Sc in 7th ch from hook. Sc 15. Turn. (16 sts)
2. Ch 1. Hdc in same st. Hdc 15. Hdc 7 in ch loop. Hdc 16 down other side of ch.
3. Ch 1. Hdc in same st. Hdc 15. *Hdc, 2 hdc in next st* work 3 times. Hdc 17. Tie off.

Lay your pouch so the opening is at the top. Count 8 sts in from the side, and sew the strap in place. Count 8 sts in from the other side and sew the second strap in place.
To add some contrast, you can sew an edge around the whole pouch. Starting anywhere, work a sc in each st around. Be sure to work increases at the top of the straps: hdc 2, followed by an increase, worked 3 times around the top of each strap.

  1. Due to chronic illness I have bladder issues. Will be making this for my adult briefs instead of using a ziplock bag.

        1. You would make your foundation twice the width that you need (the width of the brief). Then you work more rows until the piece is tall enough to fit. Then adjust the straps accordingly.

    1. Thank you Cora Shaw want a neat idea for the adult briefs I had wondered what I could put mine in this is a great answer thanks again

  2. Mine only ended up 9 inches…there are 2 sizes of G hooks, so I used F, but looks like it will still work.

  3. Hi I’m making this for a baby gift. What are the dimensions of the finished product? The length of mine is 11.5 inches and that just seems long to me.

    1. So sorry about the delay! Yikes! That’s about right! Mine is 11″. When you stuff it with wipes and a couple diapers it goes thicker, making it less long, does that makes sense? I wanted it to have room.
