Free Crochet Pattern - Make this simple solid hexagon crochet pattern, perfect for all your hexagon projects!

I have been loving hexagons lately. A few bloggers and I did a fun crochet-along with them at the beginning of the year, and I have been hooked since. I have a few project ideas in the works, but first I needed to write a simple hexagon pattern to use for them. This solid hexagon crochet pattern is easy to work up, and has a great shape. Hopefully it will be useful to you with your own hexagon projects!

It’s a pretty straight-forward pattern, but I have included a photo tutorial anyway. Once you work it a few times, it’s easy to make tons of them.
This pattern is a perfect beginner’s pattern and only uses 2 stitches, the half double crochet (hdc) and slip stitch (sl st). You can find a video tutorial for the hdc stitch here. (Don’t forget to subscribe to my Youtube channel.)

What you need:

Abbreviations: (American Terms)
Ch – Chain
Hdc – Half Double Crochet
Sl st – Slip stitch

Each hexie is approximately 4″ across from corner to corner.

  1. I cannot get #3 what do you mean by Ch 1. Hdc in same st. Hdc in next st. Hdc 3 in next st. *Hdc 3. Hdc 3 in next st. * because when I tried doing it it gave me more than 36 hdc I was wondering if you can explain more easily to me cuz im a beginner

  2. Hello! This is my first time making hexagons & I was wondering should I block them when I’m finished to make them a little less rounded? Thanks!

  3. Hi, I love these so much! And I am thinking of trying the yarn as well. I am wondering how many hexagons you get from one ball. I am getting ready to try your hexagon wall hanging! It is absolutely lovely!

    1. A half double crochet is like a double crochet, but instead of pulling through two loops at a time, you pull through all three :)

    2. Half double crochet(or hdc) is really easy. If you can do a double crochet, instead of pulling thru the first 2 loops, then the 2nd 2 loops. You just pull thru all 3 loops at once.

  4. Hiya I am struggling to do the last round! My hexagon keeps going circley. I find it hard to understand written patterns . is there anyway to watch the video? It says its unavalible :(
    Thanks

  5. Hi Bethany,

Can you confirm no 4 please? I am struggling with the counting so I have written your pattern out with individual stitches. I can only get it to add up to 42 stitches not 48. Do you count the chain as a stitch in itself? There are 6 chains so I may have answered my own question…

    Thanks, Sue

    1. It’s correct, but you don’t count the chain. The first sts equal 6, plus you work the 8-st sequence 5 times, which equals 40, plus the last 2 hdc. All together they make 48.

      1. I also was getting 42 stitches until i worked out what i was reading incorrectly. You hdc ch1 hdc in same stitch. The directions say in next stitch which i didnt read correctly as same stitch. You should get 48 and with a hex pattern.

  6. I just bought a new computer desk & chair your amazing looking Hexagon Puff Seat Cushion is PERFECT for the seat. I plan on making a cushioned backing for my seat as well, since it might help my fibromyalgia in my back. It might take me a while to get started (2-3 weeks since I’m on another project at the moment), but when I get done with the cushion & padding for the back of my chair, how can I send you the pics to let you see them? Oh & by the way, your video link doesn’t work. I tried it. Thanks.

  7. On row 3 it says to hdc3 in next stitch, hdc3, hdc 3 in next st.. Does that 3hdcin next st, 1hdc in each of next 3 stitches then 3hdc in next st?

      1. I’d like to increase this by another 2 rounds. I’m trying to figure out how to increase the stitches. Do you have a suggestion?

  8. do you have the pattern for the front loop 6sided hexon? it is just done in single crochet.I do them in 8 rows very simple. I like yours very much, but the front loop shows so pretty .thank you Mary roark
