This post is part of the Jo-Ann Fabric and Craft Stores® National Craft Month campaign. I received compensation, however, this post in its entirety is 100% my own ideas and opinions.

Did you know March is national Craft Month? It is! And one of the Jo-Ann Fabric and Craft Store Spring 2014’s trends is the nautical theme, which I am definitely falling in love with. To celebrate, Joann.com released a coupon for 5$ off a $25 purchase, and has a fun spring catalog with lots of crafting ideas.

Nautical is so fresh, I wanted to make a fun and easy piece of maritime decor. This plaque is very easy, and can bring the feel of the ocean into your home.

First, I found a 7 x 9 plaque at Jo-Ann and painted it white. I used two coats and sanded in between the coats.

Then, using painter’s tape, I taped off some stripes. I should have taped off the edges, but I just painted carefully.

After painting with a navy-blue acrylic paint, I sanded it a bit to give it an aged look.
From here you can add your letters. I cut mine with a Silhouette, but you could use alphabet stickers or hand paint them on, too. I used a font called “LD Mosquito” for the “Sea” and “Sailor” and the rest is in “Gloucester MT Extra Condensed.” Both are free.

I finished with a top coat and wrapped some hemp cord around the outside. Hot glue one end of the hemp on the bottom and wrap it around the outside of your plaque, putting a dab of glue at the bottom each time you come around.

I also added an anchor embellishment, which I sculpted out of Sculpey clay. It’s a bit rough. I am sure you all can do me one better!

Inspired? Yay! Don’t forget to check out the Joann coupon and get working on your spring craft. Also, check out the other spring trends, which include orchid, florals and geometric shapes! So fun.

Happy crafting :)
