Happy Friday friends! I just spent a very fun (but long) week in the mountains with a group of youth girls from my church. I must say, disconnecting from social media, giggling all night, and enjoying beautiful Mother Nature for five days was extremely refreshing. I took some projects with me and it was fun to get a few things finished. I especially loved how quickly and lovely my Menorca Bag worked up, a crochet kit by We Are Knitters. The color is fresh and pretty, and the texture of the bag is perfect.

The Menorca Kit comes with 3 skeins of fabric yarn, a 15mm wooden hook, a darning needle and a pattern booklet. I have never worked with knit fabric yarn before and I loooooove it.  It has the perfect amount of stretch to it, but not enough to make it difficult to work with.

When I pulled out that big hook, I thought,” Nah! That hook is waaaay too big for this yarn.” The foundation chain looked big and loose, and a bit shabby. Luckily I decided to trust the pattern because it worked up beautifully. Once I started working single crochet stitches into the chain, I saw the texture come alive.

Isn’t it pretty? And that is only a few minutes of work. You can make the entire bag in about 90 minutes. Chunky yarn is so fun!

The bag itself is very substantial; I won’t be adding liner to it. It’s perfect the way it is!

I made a few adjustments to the pattern. This Menorca Bag is very easy to modify for your own tastes. I wanted my bag a bit shorter, so I worked a few less rows on the bag body before adding the handles. I also added a row of single crochet stitches across the top of the handles before working the last row of slip stitches.

This bag is simple but very on-trend and perfect for beginners.

  1. Hello! I was really wanting to crochet this bag, but when I looked for the specific yarn you used the “We are knitters,” I couldn’t find it. I understand that this blog post was posted a while ago. So do you have a different yarn to substitute it? Thank you!

    1. Hi Tammy! Yes this was a while ago, very sorry! It looks like they don’t have the pattern any more either darn! If you wanted to wing it, any bulky t shirt will do, you can try Wool and The Gang (online only), We are Knitters is an online only shop as well. Or Hoooked XL Ribbon. All of these are online, I have not been able to find a good t shirt yarn in stores, sadly.

  2. Sorry for the constant questions but i’ve ripped it out started again and still have out of 4 skeins have a bit more than 2 left over. I made it about 12″long. What am I doing wrong?

    1. Size issues are just gauge issues, meaning your stitches are just tighter.
You said your first one was 24″, did you have the same st count both times? If you have double checked your stitches and everything is correct except the the size, you can change it by going up a hook size to make everything bigger.

  3. I’m having trouble with the number of stitches increasing. You have to slip stitch at the end of each row is that correct? Then you chain one and start the next row. Does a slip stitch increase a stitch? What am I doing wrong?

    1. No, don’t work into the sl st, it’s just the join. Ch 1, work the first st in the same st as the chain (the first st from the previous round), then join with the first st of the current round.

      1. Thank you for your reply! I had some issues, finished it and thought it was too long. As for the diameter it shows 30″. Mine was not 30″. maybe 24″. Strange. Each round you complete should technically end in the same place on each row. Is that correct? The length was way too long and I only ended up using 2 skeins but they sent me 4! I’m baffled. I’m going to try it again. I love that you did a single crochet on the handles. Do you cut your yarn and then do it separately? Thanks for your help. I hope mine eventually looks like yours.
