I think we can collectively agree that crochet is awesome. It’s therapeutic, it’s useful, it’s fun, it passes the time…need I go on? Today is National Knit or Crochet in Public Day, which is an awesome holiday in my opinion (although I’m sure you don’t need a holiday to crochet in public, ammi right?). This cute Crochet in Public Bag is something that I thought up some time ago, but today is a fitting day to finally write and publish the pattern. This bag is perfect for a quick project on the run, especially if you are somewhere where you can’t sit or hold your yarn in your lap. Take your crochet literally everywhere

This is also terribly useful for when your baby is just getting mobile (why are unfinished crochet projects SO interesting to those chubby little mayhem-creators?)

As I am writing this, I am thinking about the places I have taken my crochet projects, and I can’t recall a strange place; mostly just the usual places: airport, doctor’s office, my car. But I want to ask YOU, where is the weirdest public place you have brought your crochet?

  1. The craziest place I’ve crocheted has to be in my work truck. I ran an auto parts store and also made deliveries (which is how I managed to get promoted to manager, actually). When one is stuck waiting for a train to clear the tracks, one wishes for something to do to keep the brain occupied while sitting idly. I decided this was an excellent reason to keep my current WIP in the truck. While everyone else was screaming about waiting 20 minutes or more for the train to clear the tracks, I was peacefully crocheting. It didn’t require my full attention so I was ready to drive as soon as the barrier lifted.

  2. Thank you so much for this pattern, Bethany! I just found it and made one bag this very afternoon, with 2 colours of scrap cotton yarn. It turned our beautiful and will be very useful for my travelling projects.

As to the strangest place where I’ve crocheted, it was probably in 5th grade (over 30 years ago) under my desk in class. I was sitting in the back, but the teacher eventually found out. But she was amazing, instead of punishing me she told the class “look at her, she is busy crocheting but still can follow the lesson very well!” Of course, I put it away, tomato-red…

  3. I made one last night.. thanks so much for the pattern. I am so glad that I read the comments. I,too, had problems with row 4 thanks so much cor clarifying. It worked up well and was quick and easy and only used 3.5 ounces of Caron cakes yarn.

  4. I think this bag is so cute. Is their a weird place to crochet? Nah, couldn’t be. I’ve crocheted just about everywhere I am. I ended up with the crochet home ec class way back in 7th grade and my teacher let me use the blanket I was already making as my project. Other places: Dr office, hospital, work, vehicle, vacation.

  5. The strangest place I crocheted was the DMV waiting for my number to come up. I also crocheted at the social security office. I was changing my name when I got married. Thank you for the free pattern, oh I almost forgot I would take my crochet to work at a manufacturing place waiting to start work.
Beautiful pattern very easy to crochet :)

  6. 9 rounds in the circle seemed big with mine! I did 4 and then DC’d in front loop to get an edge and continued for 13 rows. I left two little holes in body near the bottom and middle for yarn to come out and then I made the straps super long (50chains over 15 stitches) so I can knot them. I made the bag so I can stitch without the yarn skein bouncing all over the place. I love the colors you did!

  7. Thanks so much for the pattern! I’m on crutches and I just changed the double loops to a single long strap and this is perfect for carrying things around the house!

I do yarn/needle work everywhere, but probably the strangest place was the ER. I can’t take pain meds, so crocheting keeps me focused on something other than the pain. I have knit at restaurants, crocheted at concerts, and even cross stitched at a dog adoption event (I was finishing up the project for their silent auction). I love how many people tell me how they have been inspired by watching me work!

  8. Hi Bethany, thanks for this pattern and all your other patterns! I wish I could crochet faster so I could make ALL your patterns!
A group of us here in the Minneapolis/St. Paul area get together regularly and crochet either at Barnes and Noble or at the MOA. You can read more about our group on our blog. Look up Crochet Twin Cities. We are also on Ravelry.

  9. I crochet at the beach….A LOT! ;) Almost always have a lady or 2 say ..I never thought of bringing my project, what a great idea.
Beth- love this pattern…going to be making several as small gifts for the holidays.
    Thank You!

  10. Can’t wait to make your Crochet in Public bag!! Not only is it adorable but know I will grab it every time I’m going out.

  11. Love this bag, I made 2… The first one was way too big, I used scrap yarn, it’ll be great as a yarn storage bag. The second one will be perfect as a crochet in public bag.

  12. Hello. Thanks for this pattern . I am from Trinidad and Tobago and I am currently on vacation in Nort Carolina. I am a bit confused with rows 4 to 7. I do not understand the commands “Dc2”, “DC3”, etc. Is it 2 or 3 etc DCs in every other stitch after the stitch with 2 DCs?

  13. Am I able to sell the finish product, using your pattern, if I give credit to you for the pattern?

    Thank you.

  14. I was pleasantly surprised when I read a couple of you crochet in church. Maybe that is what I should be doing and then I may be more fully aware of what is going on around me. I just love this idea so much that I need to gather my church supplies for next Sunday and here it is just Monday!
