FREE Crochet Pattern: Pink Crochet Plaid Slouchy | Make this gorgeous plaid hat in 4 pretty colors for a beautiful color effect.

Happy Monday friends! Today I bring you a twist on my Plaid Slouchy Hat. With Valentine’s Day coming up, I thought it would be a perfect time to try a different color scheme on this hat and adding in a 4th color. At first I was nervous as to how the scheme would turn out, but it worked perfectly. Isn’t it pretty?

These hooks. Oh my goodness. I’ve heard tell of these fabulous hooks but hadn’t had a chance to use one until this past week. It feels so nice in my hand. I got some advice from Lorene from Cre8tion Crochet when I was ordering because they have so many options. The Candy Shop turned out to be perfect. They are so smooth and sparkly and have the perfect amount of weight to them.

I admit, I am not used to using a hook with a neck the widens as the Furls do. At first I was nervous that I had such a beautiful hook and I wouldn’t be able to use it. I tend to crochet up on the hook pretty far, so I thought it might not work. Not so. It feels lovely. Yes, it felt different for the first few stitches, but I could feel my hand muscles breathing a sigh of relief. It is so comfortable to hold and the tip is the perfect combination of tapered and inline.

Because I did need to compensate for my high-neck crochet habit, I went down a hook size and made my hat with the gorgeous Strawberry H hook. To make this 4-tone crochet pink plaid hat, all you need to do is alternate between two mid tones. You would still have the dark and light kitty-corner, but now the mids will alternate rows and be kitty-corner too.  I used Knit Picks Brava in White, Blush, Cotton Candy and Rouge. Blush and Cotton Candy are my two mid tones. You can see I alternated between Rouge and Cotton candy on the first row(the two darker pinks), then switched to White and Blush, making sure the mids and the dark/light are kitty-corner from each other.
I finished the hat the same way I did the original Plaid Slouchy.

I love how it turned out! Now that I know how easy it is, I will be making one aqua and mint, and maybe gray ❤. Of course the fluffy white pom-pom on top is perfection!  I got mine here, but you can make your own using this tutorial. Don’t be intimated, it’s super simple.

  1. Do you have a written pattern for the 4 color plaid? I found the Buffalo plaid on ravelry but would like to try this 4 color as well. Sooo pretty!

    1. I don’t have anything other than this blog post, very sorry! You can use any of my plaid patterns, simply alternate a variant color for your “mid” color every other row.

  2. Whistle and Ivy,
Absolutely love your patterns. I have made so many of these, even made my sons family matching hats for fall family portraits, loved how they all looked💗

I have an older pattern I purchased, “The Plaid Collection”, I’ve got all my supplies to make the Plaid Slouchy Hat in pinks, but my pattern doesn’t have the infant size on it, is there an updated version I could get?

    Thank you,
    Marilyn

        1. Will you please email me using the email above? And you probably want to delete this! You will get so much spam, bots scan the internet looking for emails being dropped in comments like this!

  3. Great pattern, thanks for sharing.. question: how do y’all keep the yarn from tangling .. each row gets worse and worse..

  4. Love this pink plaid hat – just went out and purchased my colors and am ready to start! Just wondering if the pattern as stated is for an adult or a child – will I need to adjust for my 6 year old grand daughter? If i need to adjust – will hook size do it – from I to H or will I need to make band shorter than 15 inches and do less that 72 stitches around? Thank you!

  5. I love your plaid patterns. I made my grandson the red and black plaid hat and then I made the pink plaid with the grey ribbed band for my granddaughter, both with pom poms. They came out great and I sent them off to them. Thank you for all of your beautiful patterns and stitch tutorials. I love doing the plaid stitch.

  6. Absolutely beautiful! My wife’s favorite color is pink, and I actually already have all four of these colors in Knit Picks Brava left over from a baby blanket project done last year. I think it’s meant to be. Thank you so much for the free pattern.

  7. My daughter would look so cute in that pattern. Everything has to be pink right now for her, pretty much! i want to make her the robot hat too, because she has a stuffed toy robot that she loves and I know she’d get a kick out of having a matching hat! And oh, those hooks are beautiful! I would be afraid of hurting them too. lol probably a good thing I missed the giveaway!

  8. Bethany , I found Whistle & Ivy site from Candy who mentioned your site at Meladora’s Creations.
I have been for over a year and look forward to your updates .
I am excited about making something in plaid. Maybe start with dish cloth use up my odds and ends
to get the rhythm before venturing to a hat.

As I am an adult with small head, just under 22″ wondering if I should just go ahead and use an H hook as the band is stretchy. I always have to adjust hats when making for myself.

    1. Hello Wendy! Thank you for following along, I truly do appreciate it! My head is about 22″ and this hat fits me perfectly, but be sure to meet the gauge :)
