You guys! IT’S DONE. I am so excited to finally share this project with you today. If you have been following me on Instagram, you may have wondered what in the world I have been working on. I think I crochet pretty slow, so this thing took quite a few hours to complete, but I love the finished project. The Boy was pretty excited about this Pretzel Pillow, and was constantly asking me if I was almost finished with it. And now I am–I present…The Crochet Pretzel Pillow!

This pretzel pillow is actually very simple. It’s made entirely of sc stitches, so it is a perfect beginner’s project. I connected the ends with Velcro, and it ended up being a fun, multifunctional pillow.

Ch 61. Sl st into first ch, forming a large loop.

1.  Ch 1. Sc in same st. Sc 60. Join with sl st. (61 sts)

Repeat this row until your piece is 82″ long. You can make your pretzel longer to make it larger, but 82″ is the bare minimum to make the shape work. Each color block is a skein. If you are ordering yarn for this, you can make the pretzel with 6 skeins, just be sure to leave yourself a few yards of your first and last color, so you have enough yarn to sew the ends closed.

Sl st one end closed.

Once the end is closed, you can stuff the pretzel. Be careful not to overstuff it. It will be bending sharply to make the shape, and you don’t want your stitches to stretch out on the bends.
Sl st the opposite end closed.

From here, you are free to permanently sew your pillow into a pretzel shape.  I liked the multi-functionality of a long, thin pillow, so I sewed Velcro in place to make it easy to do and undo the shape.
I originally tried to secure the pillow in place with buttons, but it proved to be futile, as a button loop was too loose to allow the pillow to keep a firm shape. I tried Velcro and it worked much better. It’s a bit of a pain to sew the Velcro on once the pillow is stuffed, so I am hoping you can learn from my trial and error.

For ease, you can place the pillow in a pretzel shape, mark the pillow with stitch markers and sew the Velcro in place before stuffing. You can use my Velcro pieces as a guide. Keep in mind, the larger your Velcro pieces are, the more firm the hold will be. (the coral color has a Velcro piece on the under-side oriented in the same way as the mint block). This allows for the Velcro to connect the ends of the pillow, as well as where they cross.

  1. What about a soft bendable rod center? You can then stuff it a bit more, too, so not to feel it. :-) Def wanna make one for my sister’s first new apt

  2. Thank you for being so kind. I have been crocheting since I was a child. Your patterns are delightful and really enjoyable.

I used a lot of your patterns last Christmas to make afghans for each of my children and grandchildren.

Keep up the good work. God bless you.

    Sincerely Donna

  3. I really like this pattern.. and it’s something I am thinking about making. My questions is regarding the filling. Any suggestions on choices and wondering how much it would take to fill.

    1. Thanks! It used polfyil (in the materials list), and they really stuff the bags full when you buy them. I didn’t use more than a regular-sized bag.

  4. Wow I love this idea and my boys would as well! I wonder if you could share a pic of you son sitting with it?

  5. Very fun, kid-appropriate pillow! I can see my kids tossing this around. In a former life I crocheted but it’s been many, many years. I would have to go the fabric-sewing machine route! Visiting from Welcome Home Wednesday party.

  6. Love this! Another great pattern as always, Bethany! I especially like that you used velcro instead of sewing it into a pretzel. Would you mind if I shared this as beginner project in my Crochet 101 series in a few weeks? Once I teach SC, I think this would make a perfect project to practice with. It’s something different from the usual scarves and swatches.

  7. The fabric of that pretzel pillow looks like knitting or a waffle weave fabric! Beautiful! that would make a fun baby toy, cuddle, lovey, etc. I like the colors for a scarf. well done, Bethany! love your site!

  8. This is such a cute idea!! Thank you for all your details on how you put it all together. It’s very helpful. I might make one of these for my grandson for Christmas. I was going to make him an afghan but he might like this to snuggle with better. Of course, I’m thinking of making one for myself to snuggle with also!! Thank you!

  9. Im not surprised it took ages. Single crochet works up very slowly and you have done a lot of rows. It’s a great beginner project. By the time they finish they should be terrific at working sc. what a fun idea.,
