Gold Mirror Makeover

Hey Whistle and Ivy readers!! It’s Shonee again from Hawthorne and Main.  I am so excited to be hanging out with you guys today!! Today I am going to share with you my transformation of this gold frame mirror.

We purchased this mirror a couple of years ago from a lady on Craigslist.  Her and her husband were getting ready to sell their house and move into a smaller place.  They had some amazing stuff for sale.  I grabbed this mirror for $50.  We also got a console table, ladder, bench, treasure chest and some tools.  I think we cleaned her out!!

It is kind of hard to tell from the pictures how big this mirror is.  It is about 6 feet tall and almost 4 feet wide, it’s pretty big! 

In the house we lived in before this one, I had it sitting against the wall similar to how it is here only it was was sort of in a hallway.  It looked perfect!!

 Now in our new house I have it sitting to the left of the large window in the front room, by the gas fireplace. I have tried to put it in multiple different areas and for now it just looks the best to me right here.

The question people ask me the most when they see this mirror is, “Wow that’s a beautiful mirror, where are you going to hang it?”  I did think about hanging this mirror, and it has a very strong cable on the back if I ever decide to hang it.  For now though I like the dramatic look that it brings into this space just sitting on the floor!

In the beginning I REALLY REALLY loved the gold color.  I even added some dark antique accents to give it more contrast.  I have been looking at this mirror for the past few weeks and I knew that a change was about to happen.  You see, I am the type of person who likes change, call me crazy!  This past week I decided it needed an update.

When I thought about the color that I wanted to use my mind sort of instinctively went toward Annie Sloan Chalk Paint.  In the past I have used a lot of Pure White but this time I decided that I wanted to try out Old White.  So far I am loving the final look!  Let me show you my process in painting this frame. 

Lets get started:

I first gathered all of my supplies, that way I could work efficiently and I wouldn’t be running around the house looking for this or that.

 

I grabbed my blue masking tape and carefully tapped off the mirror so that I would have a clean, mess free paint line after I was done.  I also have a bunch of newspapers from all of my couponing adventures.   You can see what I have done with some of those extra news papers here.  I laid out newspapers on the ground to catch any drips.

I then grabbed my ASCP in Antique White and my favorite paint brush. 

Now ready to paint!!

This frame has so much detail, the corners especially!  This translates into a harder time getting the paint everywhere.  One thing that I found to be useful when painting something with a lot of detail is to do thin coats of paint.  What I mean by this, is I probably could have drowned the details in paint and got it all covered in one coat, but using a lot of paint takes away the details.  I just put 2-4 thin layers of paint on those hard to reach spots.  Letting the paint fully dry between coats.  It did take me a couple of days to get all of the coats on but it came together fairly fast!
