FYI: GIMP is a free "photoshop-esque" program. It does all the basics that photoshop can do. I recommend it for those who don't want to drop the dough on photoshop. (Me)
First, open your image in GIMP. (File, open, choose your file)
Next, if you have chosen a color file, turn it into a black and white image by going to Image, then Mode, then Grayscale.
To get your outline, go to Filters, down to Edge-Detect, and over to Edge.
When the box pops up, click OK.
Now you have a black image with a white outline.
To get a white image with a black outline, go to Colors and down to Invert.

Hi Bethany! Thanks so much for sharing this tutorial with us. I'm pretty much a computer dummy so I need good easy directions for doing editing on images...like yours. I saw your post over at "Or So She Says".

DeleteUhhm I'll download Gimp right now and try it! I had the trial for Photoshop but it's over now! Thank you very much for the tip, it will be very handy!
ReplyDeleteI love it! It takes a little adjusting to go from Photoshop to GIMP, but it's a great program and has a lot of the fun filters and effects that photoshop has. I do all my editing with it !
DeleteThanks for stopping by :)
To think of the days I wasted on trying to figure out Illustrator, exactly for this purpose--to get a simple outline. Thanks so much! I'd heard about Gimp years ago, but figured it was like the Paint program that's included in Windows. How wrong I was!!
ReplyDeleteI'm all excited now! The possibilities...
:o)
Yay! I am so glad I could help! It's a really awesome program, a little bit of a learning curve, but it works awesome!
